A collection of work will be on exhibition Friday, July 10th through Saturday, July 18th. Tony Da (1940-2008) was the first Pueblo "rock star". He broke cultural barriers as a "modern Indian" steeped in San Ildefonso Pueblo tradition but living in a contemporary world. A grandson of Maria Martinez, his precision designs, and techniques revolutionized Pueblo pottery and created a new vocabulary for the art. Among the first men to both make and design pottery, he introduced sgraffito etching, inlaid stones, and beads, initiated black and sienna colorations, and invented his stylized iconography derived from the ancient Mimbres pottery.

Observe the artistic process live as oil painter Jono Tew works in the gallery garden. Tew's paintings reflect the movement in the environment: the contours of the land, the winding roads, the wind in the clouds and trees. "Rural New Mexico has a pastoral solitude unique unto itself. The passage of time doesn’t seem to have the same hold out here. Vintage trucks pass newer models on dusty roads. A tractor sits in the shade of a tree next to an old horse-drawn plow. Nowhere else have I witnessed the same humbling vastness of space coupled with the tiny reminders of human existence."

Rhymer & Riley Art Exhibition
Type of Event: Art Exhibitions, Location: Manitou Galleries

2:00PM - 6:00PM
FREE
Sculptor Paul Rhymer and Painter David Riley showcase their award winning talents in an exhibition at Manitou Galleries opening July 10, 2020. Both artists will be demonstrating during the day. Bronze artist Rhymer will be showing sculptures in a variety of sizes, including a monument-sized roadrunner work, "Life in the Fast Lane." “Much of the new work has been inspired by and pays homage to my love of music. I am in awe that music, as an art form, can immediately invoke an emotional response. I’ve been using animal subjects in my sculpture for my narrative for songs. It’s been really fun,” he says. For Life in the Fast Lane, it all came down to birds. “I love birds. Period. Roadrunners have tons of attitude and are really interesting from a sculptural point of view. I’ve sculpted bunches of them. At some point I felt that the idea needed to be more epic. What better place to have an 8-foot roadrunner than in New Mexico at Manitou Galleries?” In mid-2017, when Utah artist David Frederick Riley began creating large-scale, monochromatic paintings of western wildlife in his studio, he viewed it as nothing more than an opportunity for some free-spirited experimentation. The former illustrator and Savannah College of Art and Design alumnus had already found success as a traditional portrait artist. “When I started playing around, it was for fun,” confesses Riley. “I simplified my color palette and gave myself a whole lot of free range to experiment with throwing paint at the canvas.”

Adam Normandin: Wanderlust
Type of Event: Art Exhibitions, Location: LewAllen Galleries

5:00PM - 7:00PM
FREE
Contemporary realist painter Adam Normandin is known for distilling the sense of power, immensity, and speed of freight trains and railyards in his transportive oil on canvas paintings. With remarkable precision, Normandin conveys both the dynamic, elemental energy of powerful locomotives and diverse rolling stock of the American railroad. Beyond conveying their interest as mighty machines, the artist depicts the minute details that serve to animate them, displaying the geometry of their exteriors as well as the play of sunlight and shadow across them to create visual excitement from objects whose associations in the American cultural imagination are truly epic. He pays meticulous care to communicating the vivid coloration of these railcars, complete with rust, earth, and graffiti that adorn them. This hyperrealist approach—characteristic of Normandin’s art—encourages his viewers to examine more closely the conceptual associations we have with these formidable machines.

Nocona Burgess is a member of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma. He is the son of a former tribal chief and the great-great-grandson of one of the most revered Native American leaders, Chief Quanah Parker. He presents strikingly modern depictions of Indigenous men and women from various tribal Nations of North America. His paintings mix careful research, firsthand knowledge and raw passion. By combining brightly colored shapes with crisply outlined facial features and traditional dress, Burgess explores the cultural context, life story and identity of each sitter. In this way, the artist urges us to update our perceptions of Native people and consider the intriguing and often highly politicized place of Native American portraiture. Nocona will be painting and demonstrating at our 123 West Palace Avenue location on Saturday July 11, 2020 from Noon - 2pm.

The work on view, ranging from neon light work to wood and feather marionettes, debuts July 10 and will run through July 19th. Windows, a new program of viewable art that can be accessed from the streets and sidewalks of South Guadalupe and Read Streets, was created in response to the temporary shutdowns of COVID-19. Scannable QR codes will be available to visitors from the sidewalk who would like to learn more about the work on view, and private appointments and walkthroughs will be available throughout the week. Visitors can schedule an appointment by calling (505) 982-8111 or emailing info@formandconcept.center. Form & Concept invites fellow neighbors and galleries of the Railyard Arts District to display significant works of art in their respective windows as a sign of optimism in difficult times.

One reservation time = one person entry, so please sign up for each individual in your group. Raphaelle Goethals’ practice comes from a desire for larger truths, a search for the timeless and the infinite, and a cultivation of both devotion and humanism. Through her process, she allows her psyche to drift into a deeply internal and instinctual place where each body of work, each painting, and each mark or gesture advances from the preceding one, developing intuitively within a framework of layered content and coded language. “My internal language of mark-making evolved from my early interest in the semiotic, the study of signs and symbols and how we assign them meaning. This is where I am called to search for the Sublime,” says Goethals. The evolution of this body of work gave birth to several key developments. The conceptual exploration of bringing micro to macro and breaking away from the conventional rectilinear canvas is evident in one of the cornerstones of the exhibition: "Séléné." The circular form has no beginning or end, no straight angle. It is the suggestion of space and our place in the cosmos. The round format of this work is new for Goethals and required a vastly different compositional approach. It allowed her to explore on a detailed level the same shape that she had used to create subtle grid structures within her paintings. Taking this form to the macro level allows the viewer to dive into a painting such as "Séléné" the same way we can allow our imagination to sink into infinite space itself.

Axle has been making online exhibitions in the past months, and feeling ready to make a project in the physical world. Although we've been patiently waiting for the right time to reopen our mobile gallery, we still don't see when that will be able to happen that people can come inside. We are concerned with the spread of the virus and support the necessary restrictions on our activities, but .....We have a solution, for now. We are creating a series of exhibitions, BROADSIDES, on the exterior of the mobile gallery. An artists design work will be selected on July 12th and printed and wheat-pasted to the sides and back of Axle. We will print and paste up the selected work and park the gallery around Santa Fe opening July 17. Now is an unusual and poignant time in our world. We encouraged artists to send work for consideration that engages and contributes to one or more of the important issues that are foremost in the public dialogue at this time, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, police violence and racial Inequity in our culture, climate change, and how we might start living in the world we want to see. The project is open to New Mexicans: artists, curators, scientists, and thinkers of all kinds, and can use images derived from drawing, painting, photography, collage, graphic design, writing, and more. Beginning July 17th. People can see the work while walking or driving, and while maintaining safe practices. Go to www.axleart.com to find time and location.

The event follows the July 17 virtual opening of De León's Hostile Terrain 94 art exhibition, which was created to raise awareness of the death and suffering that occur regularly at the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Both events are part of Beyond Borders,a powerful series events that use the lens of art and social sciences to examine the global refugee crisis and realities of migration and border policy in the Northern hemisphere. Beyond Borders is sponsored by the School for Advanced Research in collaboration with SITE Santa Fe and the Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe.
