Films in New Mexico

So many films and TV shows pass through Santa Fe and New Mexico in a year it's hard to keep up with what is shooting by whom and where. There are always clues though, like seeing Willem Defoe and Anton Yelchin from "Odd Thomas" on the Santa Fe Plaza-the scaffolding, lights, and cameras covering nearby buildings were a giveaway too. Or running into Woody Harelson in the grocery store, in Santa Fe working on "Game Change". Or catching a glimpse of Colin Firth at the airport, apparently coming to town to shoot scenes for "Gambit".

For the most part, Santa Fe's resident stars are given the respect and privacy they deserve by town locals, although it's hard not to react a little bit when you come eye to eye with Gene Hackman at a restaurant. Still, it's the coming and going of Hollywood notables in Santa Fe as they pass through town that keeps locals and visitors alike on their toes.

Shooting is onging - and we're psyched - in the area and around the state for "Lone Ranger" with Johnny Depp as Tonto, Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger, and James Frain; directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Production began in March for "Longmire," a modern western shooting in and around Santa Fe and Las Vegas, NM. The ten episode premier season will begin airing on A&E this summer. Production recently finished around Santa Fe and Albuquerque for "Biomass," which tells the story of a highly secretive government research facility that suffers a containment breach of a genetically engineered new life form, the results are catastrophic. This is the first feature for Anthony Riazzi, a New Mexico transplant from Los Angeles where he supervised the Digital and Visual Effects for "X-Men: The Last Stand", "Resident Evil: Extinction" and was the Technical Director for "The Matrix Revolutions". Riazzi also wrote the screenplay for "Biomass".

Other recently finished productions in Santa Fe and NM include: "Jackie," a Dutch production filmed in Western NM and "The Last Stand" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger with locations throughout the state. Also wrapped, "Stars" shot in Santa Fe and Northern NM; "Tin Star" shot around Galisteo, among other places, with Cam Gigandet, David Denmand, and Keir O'Donnell; "Roswell FM"; "Odd Thomas" which made quite a scene in Santa Fe; "The Banshee Chapter".
The largest movie production in New Mexico history, Marvel Studios', "The Avengers," Marvel's the Avengers has been playing across the country and has been a hit.

A new Facebook page is now up to help track what's happening in and around Santa Fe's movie scene. Shot Here will also be a fast-paced 30 minute video segment with visits to sets and interesting stories about the stars and movies that were created in New Mexico.

Did you miss us at Sundance this year? We were there and had lines out the door to our spot along Main Street and filled the place to bursting during a celebrity packed luncheon. We were also at SXSW in Austin. Take a look at Shoot Santa Fe for the latest news and incentives for film companies working in New Mexico. Shoot Santa Fe is taking part in the Locations Show in Los Angeles in June as well.

A new addition to the state's film infrastructure, the state of the art Santa Fe Studios, opened in late 2011. "Made by filmmakers for filmmakers," the facility is impressive in its execution and scope. We're standing by to hear what the first film in the doors will be.

Santa Fe and New Mexico have a long history in the movies going back to the 1940's and the days of classic Western films. Not unlike today, stars of the time like John Wayne, Alan Ladd, Gregory Peck, Gene Autry, Humphrey Bogart, Betty Grabel, and so many more could turn up in a local hotel or on the street. And just like today, folks kept an eye open for a chance to see who might be passing through town. New Mexico, Santa Fe, and the hundreds of film professionals living in the state are proud to keep that film heritage alive and vibrant in the 21st Century.
