Let's Take A Look
Location: Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Museum Hill (505) 476-1250Event Type: Art
During this time, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. These curators will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes, the discussion among the curators may become as much or more informative than the identification of the artifact. The event is always FREE and open to the public.

The $64,000 Question
METROPOLITAN OPERA SCENERY DISPLAY
Two huge painted scenic backdrops from the old Metropolitan Opera house in New York, bought in the 1950's with money won on "The $64,000 Question" TV show by an opera enthusiast from Long Island, New York, will be on display, Wednesday evenings at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe in the railyard, May 9th to June 6th. The story of the scenery, painted by famed Met designer Joseph Urban, will be presented in a talk given by Webster Young, a composer, music journalist, and New York opera director. Young was invited twice by the White House to be a candidate for director of the National Endowment for the Arts. He will talk, play his concert grand piano, and host a Q&A with the audience.
The scenic backdrops by Urban date from 1928 and 1935, and are 50 x 24 feet. They will take up the entire width of one of the museum's large rooms. Many of the Met's great singers sang in front of this scenery.
This event also celebrates a book release by Webster Young: "Berkeley-Paris Express - The Education of a Composer, 1968-80". Copies of the book will be available for signing. Young is composer of 10 ballets and 6 operas and studied with followers of Stravinsky and Milhaud. He has been a music journalist for New York Newsday, the National Catholic Register, and the InterCollegiate Review. Numerous videos of his operas and ballets may be found on Youtube under "Webster Young".

Santa Fe Institute Community Lecture: James Gleick
Location: James A. Little Theater 505-827-6760
The Information: How We Came To Be Deluged By Tweets
James Gleick is author of Chaos; Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman; Isaac Newton; Faster, and What Just Happened. His latest book is The Information.
The story of information begins in a time profoundly unlike our own, when every thought and utterance vanishes as soon as it is born. From the invention of scripts and alphabets to the long-misunderstood talking drums of Africa, Gleick tells the story of information technologies that changed the very nature of human consciousness. He provides portraits of the key figures contributing to the inexorable development of our modern understanding of information: Charles Babbage, Ada Byron, Samuel Morse, Alan Turing and Claude Shannon, the creator of information theory itself.
The Santa Fe Institute’s Community Lectures offer a window into the Institute’s research to understand the common patterns in physical, computational, biological, and social complex systems that underlie the most profound issues facing science and society today. This year’s series focuses on human individual and social behavior. By transcending disciplines, breaking academic molds, and drawing together an international network of unorthodox creative thinkers, SFI is asking big questions that matter to science and society.

The Wolff&Clark Expedition w Michael Wolff&Mike Clark
Location: GiG 1808 Second Street, Santa Fe, NMEvent Type: Music/Nightlife
Price: $20 - Tickets at Door - Doors open at 7:30
The Wolff&Clark Expedition is co-led by pianist Michael Wolff and drummer Mike Clark. Both of these jazz masters began their careers in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1970's and have continued to create, record and perform in the bands of the premiere jazz musicians of their time, as well as being leaders of their own projects. They are now both based out of New York City and will be joined by bassist Michael Olivola.
Michael Wolff was a member of the bands of Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Jean Luc Ponty, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim and singer Nancy Wilson, among many others. As musical director of The Arsenio Hall Show, Wolff performed with artists ranging from Yo Yo MA to Grandmaster Flash, and with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea as well. A bandleader in his own right, he has 12 recordings under his own name.
Mike Clark created his own innovative style of drumming as a member of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters Band; one of the seminal bands that changed the course of jazz and garnered an enviable position in recent jazz history for their rhythmic and harmonic inventions. Clark has gone on to be a leader of the Headhunters, which still continues to tour, and he has been one of the most sampled drummers in history. He has performed and recorded with Wayne Shorter, Wallace Roney, Donald Harrison, Chet Baker, Christian McBride, Eddie Henderson, Nicholas Payton, Lenny White, and countless others.
The music of Wolff&Clark Expedition draws upon those experiences of having played with the masters of jazz and other popular music, and combines their looseness and experimental jazz natures with their funky roots. Always central to the music is some feeling or intimation of the blues. With Wolff and Clark as the foundation of the band, the uniqueness of their concept is in the fluidity of the collaborating musicians who augment their vision. With this revolving door of band members, each "expedition" is a new musical journey on their unrelenting search for fresh, exciting, wild, and soulful music. They have a long list of potential musical collaborators including: Steve Wilson, James Genus, Christian McBride, Donald Harrison, Eddie Henderson, Randy Brecker, Wallace Roney, Terrell Stafford, Lenny Pickett, Ray Anderson, Dave Liebman, Ed Neumeister, Seamus Blake, and many more.

In 2007, American Rivers designated the Santa Fe River as the most endangered in the United States. Local environmental groups, concerned citizens, river enthusiasts and environmental artists along with the county and City of Santa Fe are working to bring the river back to life.
The Rivers Run Through Us project (led by eco-artists Bobbe Besold and Dominique Mazeaud and former Santa Fe Poet Laureate Valerie Martínez) aims to bring more attention and stewardship to the river and its communities. Between May 17-20, these three women will walk the full length (46 miles) of the Santa Fe River—from the Sangre de Cristos to Cochiti Pueblo. This four-day journey (and the resulting website) will create river-art, unite the community, promote awareness, and emphasize our relationship with river systems, earth and water.
The community (children, youth, adults, elders, families, organizations) is invited to meet the project team along the river in the city of Santa Fe at the following dates and times:
Friday, May 18: 9 a.m. Audubon Center; 10 a.m. Water History Museum (corner of Camino Cabra and Upper Canyon Rd); 11:30Alameda/Paseo de Peralta (NM School for the Arts); 12:30 Guadalupe/E. Alameda; 1-2:30 W. Alameda between St. Francis and Camino Alire; 4:30 and overnight, Frenchy's Field.
Saturday, May 19th: 10-11 a.m. Choir Performance at San Ysidro Crossing (Agua Fria Village), 11:30 a.m. Airport Rd.
Community participation can be as simple as meeting the walkers at the river for a simple greeting or having lunch or a snack along the riverfront park.
Residents are also invited to express their care and respect for the river through the following activities: litter removal; storytelling; native species planting; dance; erosion control projects; poetry/spoken word; invasive species removal; music&singing; bank stabilization, riverbank sculpture, water testing; rainwater harvesting demonstrations, theater.

Poetry Reading with Cyrus Cassells and Kate Braid
Location: Collected Works Bookstore 202 Galisteo Street (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226Event Type: Lectures/Readings
Collected Works Bookstore proudly features poets Cyrus Cassells and Kate Braid for a reading from their latest work.
Cyrus Cassells is the author of the poetry collections The Mud Actor, which was a National Poetry Series Selection; Soul Make a Path Through Shouting, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and won a William Carlos Williams Award; Beautiful Signor, which was a recipient of the Lambda Literary Award; More Peace Than Cypresses; and The Crosssed-Out Swastika. He is the recipient of the Peter I.B. Lavan Younger Poets Award, and fellowships from the Lannan Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. He teaches in the MFA program at Texas State University - San Marcos.
Cyrus Cassells' fifth book, The Crossed-Out Swastika, commemorates the blazing integrity of young people caught in the vise of World War II. Cassells follows the lives of historical and semi-fictional characters to amplify moments of almost impossible music, bravery, beauty, and redemption, illuminating the human spirit against unspeakable tyranny. Reviewing the book, poet Li-Young Li noted, "In The Crossed-Out Swastika, Cyrus Cassells sets out to accomplish a genuine synthesis, to know the nature of the powers which thwart our human evolution, and to create a voice which can account for them and comprehend them."
Kate Braid is a former construction worker whose career as a poet grew out of the journals she kept while on the job. She has taught creative writing at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and Vancouver Island University. She is the author of the poetry collections Turning Left to the Ladies, A Well-Mannered Storm: The Glenn Gould Poems, To This Cedar Fountain, Inward to the Bones: Georgia O'Keefe's Journey with Emily Carr, and Covering Rough Ground. She has also edited a number of collections, including In Fine Form: The Canadian Book of Form Poetry. She was honored by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation as one of the Remarkable Women in 2012, and from May 17 - June 2, 2012, she will serve as Writer-in-Residence at Mabel Dodge Lujan House in Taos.
Kate Braid's latest book, Turning Left to the Ladies, catalogues some of the poet's experiences during her fifteen years of working in construction. Of the collection, Our Times said, "Always clear and accessible, Braid's poetry is rich with vivid descriptive details, mini-narratives, character, and truths of every day experience, making Turning Left to the Ladies a compelling collection for women or men, whether they are blue-collar or white-collar, as well as for the poetry-averse and for the poetry fan alike." Inward to the Bones: Georgia O'Keefe's Journey with Emily Carr is an imaginary journal that painter Georgia O'Keefe might have kept if she and Canadian painter Emily Carr had ever taken a trip together throughout New Mexico and British Columbia. It was nominated one of the Literary Network's Top Ten Canadian Poetry Books for 1999, and won the Vancity Book Award.

Living with Wildfire: Prevention, Control, Recovery
Location: BLM State Office, 301 Dinosaur Trail,Event Type: Lectures/Readings
Dear friends,
As we approach the coming fire season, you may be wondering how the BLM, Forest Service, and other agencies work to protect you from wildfires. This month, at the New Mexico Public Lands Information Center's Third Thursday lecture series, we take a look at the men and women who work to minimize the impact of wildfires here in New Mexico with our program “Living with Wildfires: Prevention, Control, and Recovery.” Representatives from the BLM, Forest Service, and Los Alamos National Labs will discuss how we prepare for fire season, how we manage fires when they are burning, and how we work to recover from fires once they occur.
The PLIC's Third Thursday lecture begins at 7:00, May 15th, at the New Mexico State Office for the BLM at 301 Dinosaur Trail in Santa Fe. Doors open at 6:30, with time for a brief Q&A afterwards. For further questions, please contact Kevin at the Public Lands Information Center at 505-954-2002.
The Third Thursday Lectures are a joint presentation of the BLM and the Public Lands Interpretive Association.

The John Kurzweg Trio
Location: Cowgirl 319 S. Guadalupe St, Santa Fe, NM 87501 505.982.2565Event Type: Music/Nightlife
Description: John Kurzweg-- best known as the producer (and or mixer) for Multi Platinum rock acts Creed.,Puddle of Mudd and Eagle Eye Cherry. In 2001 he also produced a track for multi platinum singer Jewell (Atlantic). JK has also produced and mixed for many other label artists you may or may not have heard of---Social Burn (Electra), No Address (Atlantic), Cinder (Interscope), Double Drive (RoadRunner), LoungeFly (RCA), Mo Leveret (Storyville), House of Dreams (Ichiban), Noel Hartough-Mile (Sony), Tishamingo (MagnaCarta), and many he has probably forgotten to tell us about.
Kurzweg's early history--- started piano lessons when he was 7, guitar lessons at 11, and by the time he was 13, he was playing paid gigs in Richmond Va. with musicians a bit older than himself---many bands, gigs, and different instruments later (John played drums in several favorite Tallahassee Fl bands and pick up gigs with Chuck Berry and Percy Sledge),---Kurzweg procured a record deal with Atlantic Records in 1986 and in 1987 released a solo album using his middle name---"John Philip"---the album didnt do as well as hoped, so by 1989 John found himself back in Fl broke, dealess, and playing bars again----however--now he had an 8 track reel to reel, a mixing board, and some mics---so---why not produce some bands on the side?
Well, thats what he did---- In 1996 he started work with what seemed then "just another local Tallahassee band", a band called Creed- and as they say--the rest is history. In 2003 John moved to Santa Fe NM where he has a separate recording studio on a beautiful high desert property---the studio has a spacious, live drum room, a great 1979 Gretch maple kit, some very cool guitars, amps, lots of great mics and plenty of neve's, gml's, api's etc to "make things go boom"...

COMMUNITY GATHERING AT THE SANTA FE RIVER
Location: along the Santa Fe RiverEvent Type: Community,Outdoors/Sports
Residents of Santa Fe and those who live near the Santa Fe River are invited to gather at the riverbank in May to show their support for efforts to protect and preserve the city's water system as well as rehabilitate the river.
9 a.m. Audubon Center; 10 a.m. Water History Museum (corner of Camino Cabra and Upper Canyon Rd); 11:30Alameda/Paseo de Peralta (NM School for the Arts); 12:30 Guadalupe/E. Alameda; 1-2:30 W. Alameda between St. Francis and Camino Alire; 4:30 and overnight, Frenchy's Field
The public will be able to track the walkers' journey in real-time as well as see video and photos of the river and riverbank activities at this website: littleglobe.org/rivers-run-through-us
For more information, contact Valerie Martínez at valerie@littleglobe.org, 505-603-0866. Please see expanded project description and materials, attached.

Los Pinguos
Location: The Lensic Performing Arts Center 211 W. San Francisco Street Santa Fe, NM 87501 505 988 7050Event Type: Music/Nightlife,Theater/Dance
As part of its World Music series, Lensic Presents the Argentine band Los Pinguos on May 18. A longtime favorite amongst world music fans, Los Pinguos are extensively touring the U.S. and Canada to promote their eighth album, “1111,” which officially hit the streets April 18th. The new collection of songs captures the band’s dynamic genre-bending musical range, showcasing a stunning ability to integrate traditional Latin rhythms into thoroughly modern compositions.
Longtime listeners will recognize the band’s trademark infectious sound. The addition of a string quartet on four songs, lends a distinctive cinematic feel to those tracks, and the album as a whole. Many songs on “1111” have been road-tested over the last two to three years. In concert, the band reproduces their sound with precision, yet they retain that elusive raw energy live audiences have come to expect from Los Pinguos.
Hailing from cosmopolitan Buenos Aries, Argentina, Los Pinguos united in 1999, immediately winning over fans with their passionate live shows in clubs, bars and private parties throughout the capital. Making a leap of faith, the band journeyed to Los Angeles in 2001, intent on taking their career to the next level. Consistent performances for excited audiences at clubs like The Latin Lounge, The Knitting Factory, Key Club and others culminated in impressive gigs at Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade. These shows convinced the band of their ability to reach a wide and diverse audience. Spotted by a talent scout on the promenade, Los Pinguos soon found themselves winning the Grand Prize on the show “The Next Big Star” and were finally exposed to a national audience.
Since then, the band has recorded five albums and have played with such acts as Ozomatli, Taj Mahal, The Skatalites, The Neville Brothers, Pablo Montero, Paul Anka, Plácido Domingo, Yerba Buena, Charly Garcia and famed Argentinean rockers Bersuit Vergarabat. The band has been touring throughout the U.S. since their arrival in 2001 and in the recent years they have also played Mexico in 2008, Canada in 2008 & 2010, and Switzerland in 2008.
