Dr. Stanley M. Hordes, Lecture“The Sephardic Legacy in New Mexico: A History of the Crypto-Jews”
Location: Museum of Spanish Colonial Art 750 Camino Lejo on Museum HIll 505-982.2226
Dr. Stanley M. Hordes, Adjunct Research Professor at the Latin American and Iberian Institute of the University of New Mexico, received his B.A. in History from the University of Maryland in 1971, his M.A. in Latin American History from the University of New Mexico in 1973, and his Ph.D. from Tulane University in 1980. His doctoral dissertation, “The Crypto-Jewish Community of New Spain, 1620-1649: A Collective Biography,” was based on research conducted in the archives of Mexico and Spain, supported by a Fulbright dissertation fellowship. When Dr. Hordes assumed the position of New Mexico State Historian in 1981, he began to encounter Catholic and Protestant Hispanic New Mexicans whose families observed customs suggestive of a Jewish background. Dr. Hordes's book, To the End of the Earth: A History of the Crypto-Jews of New Mexico, was published by Columbia University Press in 2005 with a generous grant from the estate of Eva Feld. Click here for more information on Dr. Stanley M. Hordes. Lecture is free for members and $5 for non-members. (Memberships in the Spanish Colonial Arts Society begin at $40.) Lecture is held at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art. Seating is limited, so please call 505-982-2226 to reserve.

SFCC Film Program Showcases Student Projects
Location: Saint Francis Auditorium 107 W. Palace Ave. Santa Fe, NM 87501 (505) 476-5072Event Type: Film
Santa Fe Community College's Film Program will present its fifth biannual Student Film Showcase on Monday, May 21 at 6 p.m. at St. Francis Auditorium in the New Mexico Museum of Art, 107 W. Palace Ave. in Santa Fe. This event is free and open to the public.
The two-hour showcase, presented in partnership with the New Mexico Museum of Art, includes an eclectic mix of short films selected by the students. Each student is represented by 10 minutes of film.
The entire body of work is reviewed by a jury made up of students, staff and faculty, SFCC Co-Chair of Media Arts and Film Monique Anair said. Certificates and prizes will be awarded. Viewers also will get to vote for their favorite film, which will earn its creator the audience award.
“The showcase is a culmination of short films from experimental to documentary with every taste and variety in-between,” Anair said. “It is an eclectic show that is juried by the students and is a way for family, friends and community members to celebrate a semester of filmmaking. We are lucky to have a diverse student body, which makes for an entertaining film experience. It's a great survey of what Santa Feans are thinking.”
The SFCC Film Program thanks the New Mexico Museum of Art for donating the space for the evening's showcase. The SFCC Film Club and NM Film Resource are supporting the event.
For more information, call Monique Anair at (505) 428-1738, monique.anair@sfcc.edu.

Geeks Who Drink
Location: El Farol (505) 983-9912
Weekly pub quiz mondays @ El Farol
Simply, a quiz game played in a pub. It's an Anglo-Irish tradition, but our goal is the same: to foster friendly competition, and promote social drinking. A noble cause!
The quiz consists of eight rounds of eight questions each, played by teams of up to six people. Questions are read aloud by the quizmaster and teams write down the answers, turning them in at the end of each round.
Rounds 1, 4 and 6 are themed rounds – anything from “Eight Questions About Sex That Won't Make You Too Uncomfortable” to “TV Shows Your Parents Watch.” Round 2 is a music round worth double points: name the artist and title for each song clip. Round 3 is a multiple choice round or a speed round. Round 5 is a visual round based on a printed handout. The all-audio Round 7 usually covers movies or TV shows, and is worth the standard eight points. Finally, Round 8 is always 16 points on Random Knowledge.
One round can be jokered, doubling your points for that round only (yes, the 16-point rounds are fair game). The team with the most points after eight rounds is the winner.

Flamenco Guitar Legend Chuscales
Location: La Boca 505/982-3433
La Boca is proud to present Flamenco guitar legend, Chuscales every Monday night. 7-9pm No cover charge. A native of Antequera, Spain, Chuscales grew up in a traditional gypsy family well known for its professional musicians and dancers. His grandmother was among those who lived in the caves of Sacromonte, one of the legendary cradles of flamenco. Chusco began guitar lessons at age six under the instruction of his uncle Joaquín Fajardo & Maestro Agustinillo, two prominent masters in the region where such greats as Segovia have studied. Whether versed in flamenco traditions or not, audiences find Chuscales' music at once touching and exotic, his presence is engaging and his skill as a guitarist, simply astounding. A Chuscales concert is an experience that audiences take with them. He played the guitar for prince and princes of Spain at Santa Fe in 2009. He appeared in films “Camelamos Nauerar” (1976), “Gypsy Heart” (1998), “Flamenco Passion & Soul” (1999), “Viaje Al Duende” (2009),”The Spanish Table” (2010) and “El Payo” (2010). www.chuscales.com

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars
Location: Santa Fe Brewing Pub & Grill (505) 424-9637
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are a group of musicians who escaped the horrific violence of Sierra Leone's civil war, landed in a West African refugee camp, and formed a band with humble beginnings that has grown to be an international musical sensation. An unbelievable testament to the human spirit, the journey of Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars exemplifies the universal healing power of music.
Near the turn of the 21st Century, when Sierra Leone's war-ravaged capital was burning, thousands fled to neighboring countries. Among them were Reuben Koroma and Francis Lamgba (Franco) who began making music for fellow refugees in a camp in Guinea. The developing band was able to acquire a rusted-out sound system and beat up electric guitars as they moved from camp to camp playing their uplifting, can't-help-but-dance live shows, which included Black Nature, a teenage orphan with a gift for rap, as well as Abdulrahim Kamara (Arahim) and Mohamed Bangura (Medo), both of whom had had limbs amputated by the rebels. Recognizing the extremely high quality of musicianship, the United Nations was instrumental in financing the band's first studio recordings. The rest, as they say, is history.
Please join us for an uplifting evening of dance music by one of the greatest outfits ever to emerge from West Africa.

Champagne with Friends
Location: Cowgirl 319 S. Guadalupe St, Santa Fe, NM 87501 505.982.2565Event Type: Music/Nightlife
Description: Born in the middle of mosquito country on the “Right Side of Texas” or Beaumont as they call it, Thomas Champagne grew up with the best of both worlds, Texas Pride and a Cajun Spirit. Hitting the stage by the age of 14, Thomas' musical roots were formed on piano, bass, and drums. While attending Texas A&M University in the mid 90′s, Thomas formed a funk-rock quartet known as 4D2 and began playing throughout the state as the bassist and vocalist. Around the turn of the century, Thomas moved back to his hometown and starting performing bass with the Folsom Creek, a rock/bluegrass mix. After a great run of shows and a new album just a week from hitting the shelf, the group folded and out of disappointment and self realization, Thomas discovered his true songwriting style. For the first time ever, Thomas took the stage as a front man forming the band, Audioflava, a jazz/funk/pop entity that evolved into an electric power trio featuring Danny Anderson on guitar and Carlos Lopez on drums. Audioflava and Thomas moved to Austin, TX where he started working at Arlyn and Pedernales Studios. After a few years in Austin, Danny and Thomas decided it was time to hit the road and began touring the states as a duo, Champagne Anderson. With such a great success on the road as a duo, Thomas and Danny headed to the studio in the Fall of 2007 to complete their long awaited album, “Old Town”, and hence formed the group, “Champagne with Friends”. Within the past four years “Champagne with Friends” has performed on over 130 stages amongst 15 different states, and the train keeps on moving. In the Spring of 2011, Thomas was invited to “The Swamp Sessions” in Awendaw, SC where he then connected with Mark Bryan and Danielle Howle who agreed to produce his next project. By late Summer, Thomas moved to Charleston, to complete his second album and begin touring the East Coast as the solo artist, “T Champagne” and when joined by other talent, “Champagne with Friends”. Thomas is currently sponsored by The Music Initiative Magazine as their Emerging Artist for 2012.

Jeff Clements and Free Speech for People present "Corporations Are Not People"
Location: Collected Works Bookstore 202 Galisteo Street (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226Event Type: Lectures/Readings
Collected Works Bookstore features Jeff Clements, the co-founder of Free Speech for People, for a reading from his book, Corporations Are Not People: Why They Have More Rights Than You Do and What You Can Do About It.
Corporations Are Not People is a definitive guide to overturning the 2010 Supreme Court decision Citizens United v. FEC. It tells the true story of how some of the largest corporations in the world organized to take over the American government and Constitution, how devastating this corporate campaign has been to America and Americans, and how the American people can reclaim freedom and democracy.
Jeff Clements is the co-founder of Free Speech for People, a national, non-partisan campaign to challenge the creation of Constitutional rights for corporations, overturn Citizens United v. FEC, and strengthen American democracy and republican self-government. Clements has served as Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts from 1996 to 2000; Assistant Attorney General and Chief of the Public Protection & Advocacy Journal in the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office from 2007 to 2009; and was a partner in the Boston law firms of Mintz Levin and Clements & Clements, which he founded in 2003. He graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University Law School in 1988.
Jeff Clements will be in conversation with author, playwright, mediator, and essayist Craig Barnes, host of the radio show "Our Times With Craig Barnes."

The $64,000 Question
METROPOLITAN OPERA SCENERY DISPLAY
Two huge painted scenic backdrops from the old Metropolitan Opera house in New York, bought in the 1950's with money won on "The $64,000 Question" TV show by an opera enthusiast from Long Island, New York, will be on display, Wednesday evenings at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe in the railyard, May 9th to June 6th. The story of the scenery, painted by famed Met designer Joseph Urban, will be presented in a talk given by Webster Young, a composer, music journalist, and New York opera director. Young was invited twice by the White House to be a candidate for director of the National Endowment for the Arts. He will talk, play his concert grand piano, and host a Q&A with the audience.
The scenic backdrops by Urban date from 1928 and 1935, and are 50 x 24 feet. They will take up the entire width of one of the museum's large rooms. Many of the Met's great singers sang in front of this scenery.
This event also celebrates a book release by Webster Young: "Berkeley-Paris Express - The Education of a Composer, 1968-80". Copies of the book will be available for signing. Young is composer of 10 ballets and 6 operas and studied with followers of Stravinsky and Milhaud.
