Weekly Story Time at Collected Works

Location: Collected Works Bookstore & Coffeehouse (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226

Collected Works Bookstore is pleased to offer a 45-minute Story Time session every Wednesday and Thursday at 10.45am!

Featured books cater to children aged 6 months to 5 years.  Most sessions begin with simple but engaging books for the youngest listeners, and build to longer picture books, rhyming poems, our newest favorites, and some classics for the "big kids".

As attention spans vary, families are welcome to come and go as they wish--- we are delighted to host the group to its saturation point!  Occasionally, we break into song if the children need movement or a change of pace.  We also encourage dialogue as the stories are read and the audience's curiousity is piqued.

All children must be accompanied and upervised by an adult throughout the Story Time.  Please come enjoy our gatherings and follow up with a visit to our cafe; nothing goes ith Story Time like a good snack!

Santa Fe Community College's Visual Arts Gallery presents a showcase exhibition by the School of Arts and Design's sculpture faculty, students and alumni. Work from faculty artists, their students and program alumni will be on display in the gallery and exhibition areas in the School of Arts and Design. The public opening reception for the exhibit is on Thursday, February 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery and runs through March 8, 2012.

The SFCC School of Arts and Design sculpture faculty include John Boyce, Paul Lewis, Felix López, Jeff Overlie, Jack Slentz, Jeremy Thomas and Erika Wanenmacher. Exhibiting locally and internationally, they have received numerous prestigious awards and are represented in museums, commercial galleries and private collections across the United States.

With four dedicated sculpture studios, a covered exterior workspace and an exterior courtyard, the Sculpture Program emphasizes pluralistic approaches to sculpture as a means of visual communication. Diverse coursework is offered, including forging, mixed-media assemblage, welding, woodcarving, santero carving, glass casting and stone carving. Students are encouraged to gain an understanding of traditional and contemporary approaches to sculpture and how it complementsother art disciplines. Advanced students have access to private studios on campus.

The sculpture labs feature Mig, Tig, stick and oxyacetylene welders, plasma cutters, horizontal and vertical band saws, hydraulic shear, hydraulic roller and an array of forging tools. The wood fabrication lab has two table saws, one of which is a new Saw Stop safety saw, 36 inch and 20 inch band saws, jointer, planer, chop saw, wood lathe, 16-inch radial arm saw, sanders and a dust ventilation system. The woodworking lab has 12 European-style workbenches and woodworking hand tools. The 3-D multipurpose lab has a range of glass casting equipment including Denver glass kilns, glass cutting saws and a wet belt sander. There is also a hot wax pot and a plaster room. The courtyard has five storage sheds and a large area for stone sculpture and forged sculpture.

A sculpture concentration is offered within the Associate of Arts in Fine Arts degree. Courses are designed for transfer to university or college studio art programs. The program of study includes options for an internship component and professional development courses to build career skills.

The Wrong Omar

Location: Cowgirl Cafe 319 S Guadalupe St (505) 982-2565
Event Type: Music/Nightlife

Joey Shaheen is a touring singer/songwriter from Minneapolis escaping the brutal cold via his: "Sled-Dog-Slushy" tour. His band: The Wrong Omar have played throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. His writing style ranges from folk rock to indie quirk with some easy listening blue-grass-a-billy thrown in as well. The songs are all melodic and hook oriented with strong intelligent lyrics. The Wrong Omar has a strong radio presence in their base. Joey is touring solo, opening the show on the piano with some smooth easy listening pop, then on to guitar with rack harp for some folk rock with jazz harp. Then he engages a looping device where he creates a full band mix in real-time using bass guitar, keyboards and percussion. He closes the show with some foot-stomping music. The review from the Twin Cities Daily Planet is a good summary of what you will come away with: "...They're three pieces—two acoustic guitars, percussion. One fellow is fiddling with sweet-sounding major-seven chords while the engineer fiddles with microphones and wires. At length, The Wrong Omar open with a tune that utilizes the chord progression that guy was playing. It's beautiful with a strong, pointed chorus that compels with engaging urgency....when it hits, it's dead-on, brilliantly inspired....Excellent songwriting. Warm, wry melodies over bright, moody chords...."

Pre-registration required!  Call 505-747-3577 or email: education @ evfac.org. – $310, $15 materials fee.

This course is a combination of color theory and practical work in the dye studio. It is mainly aimed at tapestry weavers but is open to anybody interested in color and design. Hand-dyed yarns are an essential part of creating unique works of textile art. This workshop teaches the use of Lanaset/Sebraset dyes for wool and silk and explores color theory right in the dye pot. “What happens if I add some red to this blue? How can I create a smooth color gradation? What are the dyer's color wheels?” Students will become familiar with the color characteristics hue, chroma and value, explore basic color relationships and learn how to create their desired colors in the dye studio. Students will receive samples and formulas of all colors dyed in this workshop and may work out their own dye formulas for an individual project.  In addition to experimenting with color, the class will teach the development of dye formulas and stress the importance of record keeping for easy reproduction of colors. When taken in combination with Color and Design for Tapestry Weavers in March, both classes together offer students the entire artistic process - from design to dye studio to loom. Cornelia Theimer Gardella weaves abstract tapestries using her own hand-dyed wool. Born, raised and educated in Germany, Cornelia came to New Mexico in 2005 to study traditional Fiber Arts at NNMC under Karen Martinez and contemporary tapestry with James Koehler. Together with James Koehler and Rebecca Mezoff, she was part of the international tapestry exhibition Interwoven Traditions: New Mexico and Bauhaus which was shown in Albuquerque and Erfurt, Germany in 2010. She teaches at Ghost Ranch and EVFAC. Be inspired at www.corneliatheimer.com.

THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL PRESENTS PIANO PRODIGY CONRAD TAO IN“CONCERT AND CONVERSATION”TO REACH LOCAL KIDS

Location: El Castillo Community Room 250 E. Alameda Street
Event Type: Kids Stuff

The Santa Fe Concert Association (SFCA) is proud to be an educational sponsor of The Juilliard School's “Concert and Conversation” with critically acclaimed young piano sensation Conrad Tao. Conrad is not a stranger to Santa Fe, playing frequently in our city, however this is the first time he will be playing for a student audience. The students will have the unique opportunity to ask Conrad questions about Juilliard, his career education and much more. The students will also be able to ask questions of Juilliard President, Joseph Polisi, who will be introducing Conrad.

This is a great opportunity for our local Santa Fe students who are considering a career in music to get tips and information on how they might follow in the footsteps of Conrad and talented young musicians like him.

About Conrad Tao
Hailed by renowned music critic Harris Goldsmith as “the most exciting prodigy to ever come my way” (Musical America), 18-year-old Chinese-American pianist Conrad Tao was found playing children's songs on the piano at 18 months of age. Born in Urbana, Illinois, he gave his first piano recital at age 4, and at age 8, made his concerto debut performing Mozart's Piano Concerto in A major, K. 414. Conrad is currently a Gilmore Young Artist, an honor awarded every two years to single out the most promising of the new generation of U.S. pianists.

Sally Denton presents her book Plots Against the President

Location: Collected Works Bookstore 202 Galisteo St (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226

Collected Works Bookstore presents Santa Fe local Sally Denton for a reading and discussion of her latest book, The Plots Against the President: FDR, A Nation in Crisis, and the Rise of the American Right.  In The Plots Against the President, investigative journalist Sally Denton regales readers with the true story of the forces that lashed out against Franklin Delano Roosevelt as he ascended to the Presidency.  Though he was elected by a landslide in 1932, FDR's bold New Deal experiments provoked a backlash from both extremes of the political spectrum.  The extent to which FDR's opponents were willing to thwart him has never been fully explored.  Two startling events frame Denton's Plots Against the President: anarchist Giuseppe Zangara's attempt on FDR's life, and a plutocratic plot to overthro the government that would come to be known as the Wall Street Putsch.

Sally Denton is an award-winning author and investigative journalist local to Santa Fe.  Her books include The Pink Lady, Passion and Principle, Faith and Betrayal, American Massacre, The Bluegrass Conspiracy, and The Money and the Power (with Roger Morris).  She is a Guggenheim fellow and a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

ARCOS Dance presents‘500 Words or Less'

Location: The Performance Space 1583 Pacheco Street
Event Type: Music/Nightlife

‘500 Words or Less' will highlight use of space with photographs and video art leading into the studio, a museum-like display of older communication devices, and dancing already in progress when the audience arrives. The focus of the Project continually changes location in the performance space throughout the evening, adding to the layered effect of its acts. “It's fun! The format allows us vignettes with a wrapper to tie them all together,” Artistic Director Curtis Uhlemann said. “We can't wait to keep designing more sound medleys and brainstorming. I love this!” Evoking the ‘disjointed coherence' of dream, memory, and consciousness, the atmosphere is further enhanced by writing on the floor, a stack of old televisions above, trees extending perpendicular to the wall, an umbrella chandelier, and a grand piano. “It's not purely narrative,” Gionfriddo said of the evening. “It's an experience tied together by dancers, music, and characters; it requires mental participation from the viewers.”

The traditional, yet contemporary, Squash Blossom Boys bring together a mix of Old Time, Swing, and driving Bluegrass music. With Dustin Orbesen, Kit Murray, Kyle Malone, and Maren Hatch, the Squash Blossom Boys have played everything from jazz to reggae only to finally become a Bluegrass band. Occasionally, mandolinist Tristan Scroggins, violinist Sam Weiss, and multiinstrumentalist Ezra Bussman perform alongside the core quartet.
