The missions of New Mexico have been a favorite subject of artists since early 20th century modernist were drawn to this storied land. Their captivating images of mission churches endure as icons of New Mexico in the public memory at large. As Georgia O'Keeffe once noted in regard to the Ranchos de Taos Church, “Most artists who spend any time in Taos have to paint it, I suppose, just as they have to paint a self-portrait.” Many of these massive adobe structures still serve their communities today. Lovingly maintained by their congregations, they are considered classic examples of regional architecture.

A unique culture of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, the Penitente Brotherhood is a lay confraternity that arose after Mexican independence in 1821, when Spanish Catholic missionaries left the area. In the mid-nineteenth century, the region became an American territory and the Penitentes were compelled to continue their practices in private. And so their places of worship, called moradas, arose in discrete locales, their humble forms echoing their pious intentions. These modest structures, evocative of a unique culture, have also drawn the attention of artists over the last century.
