When the New Mexico Museum of Art opened in 1917 it was the first building in the state dedicated to art. Its galleries, reception areas and St. Francis auditorium were made by the people of New Mexico for the promotion of the state's rich culture to visitors and locals alike. On display is the Mercury Space Capsule 12B, created as a backup for the Mercury missions and on loan from the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. The capsule illustrates the preceding exploration missions that laid the groundwork for the Apollo 11 mission and moon landing. The exhibit includes include five small moon rocks and a New Mexico state flag that flew to the moon.
