November is coming and with it begins the wonders and glory of the holiday season. Relax, take a deep breath and think about where you’d like to travel to make the most of the coming season. Did you think Santa Fe? Great! We are here to share the beauty of our holiday traditions and the many rewarding experiences one can find by visiting The City Different this month. Here are but just a few of the events November has lined up for YOU.
Recycle Santa Fe
The country’s largest and oldest recycled art market, Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival, is dedicated to showcasing art created from discarded materials. This exciting weekend-long event kicks off with Friday night’s famous Trash Fashion Show and Costume Contest, then continues with an inspiring art market, juried art exhibits, and make and take art activities. Each year Recycle Santa Fe brings in more than 100 artists from across the U.S. who offer their original pieces for sale in the Art Market and display their work in the juried art exhibit.
Kids of all ages will have fun participating in recycled art activities all day on Saturday and Sunday. The popular “Make and Take” section is a great activity for young and old to create a recycled work of art that can be taken home to enjoy! The 2017 festival runs November 17-19.
Fall Bounty For Your Thanksgiving Feast
The produce at the Santa Fe Farmers Market mirrors the turn of seasons, as pumpkins and squashes of all varieties take pride of place beneath the water tower. The Santa Fe Farmers Market is an ideal place to get in the Thanksgiving spirit with the freshest fall ingredients for a Thanksgiving feast. Perhaps there will still be a chile roaster turning, but by November the focus turns from fresh green to the red ristras — those long strings of scarlet chiles drying for winter use — and the spicy flavor, just waiting to reappear in recipes for the upcoming holidays. Our farmers have plenty of tips and recipes to share, and a good Santa Fe cookbook easily fills in any gaps. And there’ll be fall greens to savor, as late crops show up to nestle beside onions and garlic in produce stands at the Market.
It’s That Time of Year at Ski Santa Fe!
Do you know where to find some of the best places to ski in the Southwest? You guessed it! Right here in the Santa Fe area. Ski Santa Fe is located high above The City Different but is only 16 miles from the Plaza. The ski area has a wonderful range of terrain, from isolated beginner slopes to lots of cruisers, some long bump runs, great glades and tree runs, and even a few short chutes and small bowls. Ski Santa Fe benefits from its 12,075 foot summit, 1,725 foot vertical drop, 77 trails and 225 inches of average annual snowfall. As a reminder, the Ski Santa Fe season traditionally begins on Thanksgiving Day, weather permitting.
Happy 100th Birthday New Mexico Museum
The New Mexico Museum of Art turns 100 on November 25, 2017! In observance, the Museum will host a free, day-long birthday event for all ages from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the museum, surrounding streets, as well as the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Events that day will include costumed interpreters dressed as artists from the past who will be roaming the art galleries and talking about artwork on view! Imagine that! Characters will include Georgia O’Keeffe, Laura Gilpin, Will Schuster, Robert Henri, John Sloan and a few surprise guests.
You can also dress up and pose for a photograph in a photo booth throughout the day and those that come to the event in a 1917-1920s costume will win a prize.
Light Up the Christmas Lights on the Plaza!
The official start of the Christmas holiday season begins in Santa Fe the day after Thanksgiving when by a flick of a switch, holiday lights are turned on at the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Enjoy hot chocolate and caroling as the historic downtown Plaza is lit up in holiday splendor with lights and festive decor. The magic will continue with a much anticipated visit from Santa Claus. The Santa Fe Tree Lighting ceremony takes place November 24, 2017 at 6 p.m.
It’s easy to catch the holiday spirit in Santa Fe. Any one of these events is a great reason to visit The City Different. If you’re curious for even more magical happenings in Santa Fe, you will find our detailed events calendar to be your best friend. Check out the calendar here.
