From Diego Velázquez to Frida Kahlo, from Leonardo da Vinci to Steve Jobs, from passionate flamenco to mind-blowing interactive art throughout 2017, visitors to The City Different will have the opportunity to experience a vast array of  global cultural experiences during the yearlong, citywide [blog_link url="https://santafe.org/Santa_Fe_Celebrates_Global_Arts_And_Culture/index.html" text="Santa Fe Celebrates Global Arts & Culture" date="2017-05-02] festival. Many Santa Fe institutions—museums, the Santa Fe Opera, the Lensic Performing Arts Center and of course our unique Santa Fe cultural markets—have all joined in this effort to showcase first-class art and culture from around the world.

 

VISUAL ARTS

The Prado In Santa Fe

This impressive exhibition, traveling to the United States for the first time, makes its debut in Santa Fe. Enjoy 92 mounted reproductions of the greatest works of art from the Museo del Prado, including Fray Angelico’s The Annunciation (1425–28); Rogier van de Weyden’s Descent from the Cross (1435); Diego Velázquez’s Las Meninas (1656); and Francisco de Goya’s The 3rd of May 1808 in Madrid. Representing the work of some of the greatest painters of the 14th–19th centuries, the exhibition will be displayed in the beautiful sylvan setting of Cathedral Park, where nature and architecture conspire to create the perfect outdoor gallery. The exhibit runs from May 10 through October 29, 2017 at Cathedral Park.

 

Meow Wolf

Meow Wolf creates immersive, multimedia experiences that transport audiences of all ages into fantastic realms of storytelling: a combination of jungle gym, haunted house, children’s museum, immersive art exhibit and live music venue. Memorial Day Weekend will debut The Experience Tube, a new food truck, worlds of music, performers, DJ's and more.

A mobile art gallery housed in the back of a custom retrofitted 1970 aluminum step van, Axle Contemporary is a gallery on wheels. MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS

Mirror Mirror: Photographs of Frida Kahlo

This captivating exhibition of photographic portraits of artist Frida Kahlo demonstrates how the artist came to her own comprehension of self-image at least partly through the work of her photographer friends. The exhibit runs from May 6 through October 29, 2017 at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art.

 

Lines of Thought: Drawing from Michelangelo to Now: From the British Museum

The New Mexico Museum of Art is the first international venue for this exhibition from the collection of drawings from the British Museum in London. The lineup includes an internationally recognized ‘who’s who’ of artists through the centuries: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Albrecht Dürer, Piet Mondrian, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and others. The exhibit opens on May 27 and shows through September 17, 2017.

 

Quilts of Southwest China

In southwest China, traditional bed coverings, clothing, and household items have long been made from patched and appliquéd scraps. A consortium of American and Chinese museums has worked together to document and research these quilts. This colorful exhibit starts on July 9 and runs through January 21, 2018 at the Museum of International Folk Art.

International Folk Art Market | Santa Fe

The International Folk Art Market | Santa Fe is the largest and most celebrated folk art festival in the world, having hosted more than 800 artists from 90 countries since 2004. It is a celebration of living folk art traditions that creates viable economic opportunities for and with folk artists worldwide, most of whom contribute to the well-being of entire communities. The market takes place from July 14 through July 16, 2017 on Museum Hill.

See the extraordinary work of 250 adult and youth artists at the Traditional Spanish Market, presented by the Spanish Colonial Arts Society. Art categories include colcha embroidery, retablos, hide painting, weaving, furniture and furnishings, tinwork and much more. Spanish Market will be held from July 29 and July 30, 2017 on the historic Santa Fe Plaza.

Santa Fe Indian Market, produced by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), is the largest and most prestigious juried Native arts show in the world, where visitors can buy art directly from some 1,000 artists representing 200+ federally recognized tribes from the U.S. and Canada. Music and dance, a Native film festival, a Native American clothing contest and a haute couture fashion show are highlights of the exciting weekend. Santa Fe Indian Market takes place on August 19 and August 20, 2017 on the Santa Fe Plaza.

PERFORMING ARTS

World-renowned Spanish flamenco dancer Antonio Granjero presents the passion and beauty of flamenco along with co-directors Estefania Ramirez, Antonio Hidalgo Paz and his company, Entreflamenco. Performance dates run nightly (except for Tuesday) at 7:30 pm from June 29 through September 3, 2017.

 

Santa Fe Opera

Every summer since 1957 opera lovers have come from all over the world to enjoy The Santa Fe Opera. A wide-ranging repertory of new, rarely performed and standard works are performed in a dramatic theater with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Many opera fans come early for tailgate parties in the parking lot; the preview buffet dinner on the opera grounds, which includes an informative talk about the evening’s performance; or the prelude talks which offer a lively introduction to the evening’s opera, and are free to ticket holders. The 2017 season lineup has something for everyone – from the baroque to an innovative and high tech world premiere.
