MARKETING REPORT

A Message from Executive Director
Randy Randall

Randy Randall, Executive Director

Last year, the Mayor introduced a resolution which was passed unanimously by the Governing Body proclaiming Columbus Day to be additionally known as Indigenous Peoples Day in Santa Fe. This year, Indigenous Peoples Day is on October 9 and will be celebrated from sun up to sun down on the Plaza with a day of dancing and singing. The event will have participation from many of our neighboring pueblos and tribes and is being organized in coordination with TOURISM Santa Fe.

The day will start with the haunting sound of a Native Flute at 8:00 a.m. to kick off the festivities. From 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., dancing and singing will occur on the hour with groups from many of the tribes participating in the daylong celebration. At 10:45 a.m., a Tribal Leader will offer a prayer to open the formal ceremonies followed by a presentation by the Mayor, City Councilors and Tribal Leaders. At noon there will be an Inter-Tribal Round Dance to conclude the ceremony. And finally, at 5:00 p.m., the drummers and singers will present Honor Songs followed by closing words and a prayer by a Tribal Leader.

This expanded version of the celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day this year falls on the first Monday of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta providing a significant opportunity for us to attract even more visitors to Santa Fe from the event. The opportunity to view so many native dancing and singing groups on our Plaza is rare and should be of significant interest to our Balloon Fiesta visitors. Our team is currently planning several ways to promote the Indigenous Peoples Day to these visitors and we encourage you to make it known to guests and customers who will be in the City Different on the celebration date.

  • Unique Users: 356,065 [UP 47%]
  • Average Pages Per Session: 2.09 [DOWN 20%]
  • Average Time on Site: 1:55 [DOWN 34%]
Traffic to santafe.org was up over Q2 2016, buoyed by digital advertising in April, May and June. Engagement decreased slightly due to digital advertising, which can result in a lower engagement and conversion rates when compared to organic or direct traffic. The new homepage design—in conjunction with the digital ad campaign—has affected visitor flow, changing the top pages on the site. The top 10 now reflect advertising buy destinations and information about what is happening in Santa Fe.

Public Relations [Y/Y change]
  • Pitches: 85 [UP 15%]
  • Press Releases: 6 [DOWN 40%]
  • Media Visits: 20 [UP 18%]
  • Media Contacts: 455 [UP 9%]
  • Earned Media: $5,564,680 [DOWN 14%]
  • Earned Media Impressions: 5,564,680 [Y/Y not available. Began tracking in Jan.2017]
TSF PR metrics show a strong Q2—nearly doubling the impressions from the same period last year. This can be attributed to placements in syndicated articles (AP article on the topic of chocolate trails, a Santa Fe Margarita Trail story and another on historic cities, written by Randy Yagi). These three stories accounted for 40 placements, which represent 73% of the total impressions for Q2 and 72% of the total ad value.

Cinco de Mayo occurred over this period, which provided an opportunity to promote the Santa Fe Margarita Trail. 14% of the coverage from this period was focused on the Margarita Trail/the holiday.

The number of media visits and total pitches increased because of continued, personalized outreach. In an attempt to increase the return on TSF investment in media visits, the team plans to create an enhanced follow-up system to generate even more coverage from these visits.

Blog [Y/Y change]
  • Page Views: 22,303 [UP 92%]
  • Average Time on Blog: 3:16 [UP 32%]
  • Website Referrals: 6.7% [DOWN 2.5%]
Blog traffic doubled over Q2 2016 and every engagement metric is up. Referrals to the main site (santafe.org) declined while exit rates increased, showing the visitors are coming to the blog for the content and leaving after consuming it. Conversions originating from the blog have dropped as a result.

TOURISM SANTA FE PUBLIC RELATIONS UPDATE

The month of July has again proven to be a fantastic month for Santa Fe in the news and for hosting media in the destination. Travel + Leisure announced their 2017 World’s Best Awards and Santa Fe jumped to the No. 2 spot on the “Top 15 Cities in the United States” list and broke onto the global list at No. 11 for the “World’s Top 15 Cities.” The 2017 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards are an annual survey driven by the outlet’s more than 300,000 readers and a coveted accolade within the travel industry.

When reviewing the year over year performance metrics you will see that in July 2017 our pitches are down 48% from 2016 when we sent 108 pitches. About this time last year was when TOURISM Santa Fe began a concerted effort to reach out individually to journalists and publications with custom pitch emails and July 2016 happened to be when the team focused on catching up with many of our media contacts to ensure no summer events or pitches were missed. We have since maintained a monthly trend of sending an average of 50 pitches.

Another interesting note is that this month many articles in our “Santa Fe In The News” section were live and published quickly (within 1-3 months) after we hosted or assisted the journalist. It is always nice to see a short turnaround time for the results of our efforts. Read on for a variety of media hits from this month and please share your favorites on your website or social media accounts.
