2017 May, City of Santa Fe Launches Global Arts & Culture InitiativeMay 1, 2017; Santa Fe, NM: The City of Santa Fe is pleased to announce, “Santa Fe Celebrates Global Arts & Culture,” an arts and cultural initiative organized around a series of global art exhibitions traveling to Santa Fe in 2017.
Beginning May 10th, Cathedral Park in downtown Santa Fe will host The PRADO in Santa Fe 92 full scaled mounted reproductions of masterpieces from the Museo del Prado in Madrid. The City of Santa Fe, the Spanish Colonial Arts Society and the New Mexico Multi-Cultural Foundation coordinated the exhibition that spearheaded development of the Santa Fe Celebrates of Global Arts & Culture 2017 year-long citywide celebrations of world-class exhibitions, markets and performances. Many Santa Fe institutions—including museums, the Santa Fe Opera, the Lensic Performing Art Center, and the unique Santa Fe Cultural Markets—have joined together in this effort to highlight first-class art and culture from around the world in Santa Fe.
In addition, the New Mexico Museum of Art opens Lines of Thought—Drawing from Michelangelo to Now-from the British Museum beginning May 27 through September 17, 2017. The exhibition will examine artists’ relationship to drawing as a means of recording and include drawings from Pablo Picasso, Franz Kline, Paul Cézanne, and Rachel Whiteread, to name a few. In total, the British Museum will lend the NM Museum of Art a collection of 70 drawings ranging from the fifteenth century to present day.
In addition to the visiting British Museum and Prado exhibitions, visitors to Santa Fe in 2017 will experience a vast array of high-quality, global cultural experiences from Velázquez to Frida Kahlo, from rarely exhibited Chinese quilts to Steve Jobs, from passionate Flamenco to stunning opera.
