Visiting Santa Fe

2016 July, Couple are First to Complete New Santa Fe Margarita Trail

July 29, 2016: The new Santa Fe Margarita Trail launched May 5, 2016 as an ongoing culinary cocktail experience for visitors and Santa Fe locals alike. The Trail highlights restaurants and bars that offer a special, uniquely designed and named margarita using the finest tequilas and ingredients.

Santa Fe native Joe Gonzales and his wife Audrey, who relocated back to the city in January after forty years to be close to his parents and siblings, began the Trail on Cinco de Mayo and on June 30th became the very first to complete it by obtaining passport stamps from all 31 participating restaurants and bars.

“The Trail gave me a chance to learn about the Santa Fe of today, and for my wife Audrey, a chance to know Santa Fe better than just quick visits through the years,” said Mr. Gonzales. “We went to places that we never knew existed, talked to bartenders and people at the bar, both locals and visitors. The margaritas were different, unique and wonderful. We ate food at most of the places we went to. We now have new friends and a bunch of places to go to.”

To commemorate the event, a celebration was held at Maria’s where Mayor Javier Gonzales presented them with their Margarita Bartender’s Kit—the grand prize for completing the trail, which follows a t-shirt prize for five stamps and a signed “Great Margarita Book” for twenty stamps.

“The Margarita Book signed by author Al Lucero is a great bookǃ” said Joe. “We plan to do a lot with that book. I can cook some amazing green chile chicken enchiladas, but I will try some of the food recipes in that book. I would urge locals to get a Margarita passport and go to a few places, and if nothing else, meet some of your fellow Santa Feans who are working the restaurants and bars and learn about their Santa Fe lives.”
