2014 July Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown

July 9, 2014: The Second Annual Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown is officially on. It’s all about finding the best green chile cheeseburger in Santa Fe and it’s up to the public to decide which seven restaurants will be in the final Smackdown.

Voting for the city’s best green chile cheeseburger will be open at from July 15 through Aug. 15. Or look for the Smackdown badge on the homepage to vote. Chefs are preparing for a chance at the finals with bragging rights at stake for the best green chile cheeseburger in Santa Fe.

The six burger joints receiving the most votes on the website advance to the final cook-off on Friday, Sept. 12, from 6pm to 9pm, at the Santa Fe Farmers Market Pavilion. A “Lucky Number 7” restaurant will be added during a radio-broadcasted burger crawl the week of August 18. Voters may select one restaurant per internet browser, per day.
At the final cook-off, the seven finalists fire up their grills and present their best burgers to a panel of judges and the perhaps their toughest critics—the public. Distinguished food experts, including James Beard Award winner and local cookbook author Cheryl Jamison, will evaluate each finalist’s burger to determine the 2014 Reigning Chomp. Members of the public who purchase tickets may sample each burger and cast their ballots for the People’s Choice Award.

The “burgers” don’t have to be beef. They can be fish or turkey or yak or lamb or something else, just as long as they use Northern New Mexican green chile, cheese, and appear on the restaurant’s menu through December 31, 2015.
All green chile aficionados are encouraged to vote for their favorite burger in town and take in the People’s Choice Award voting on Sept. 12th.

Restaurants wanting to participate may sign up online at now through July 15. To participate, restaurants must have a listing on Register from any page on the site or, for questions, contact Melissa Segura at (505) 955-6207

Tickets go on sale July 15 at for $25.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Santa Fe Farmers Market Institute.
