2014 August, Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown Finalists Announced

August 26, 2014: The field for the 2014 Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown is now set. More than 10,000 votes were cast on Santafe.org over the last month, with the following six restaurants advancing to the finals on Sept. 12 from 6pm to 9pm at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market Pavilion:
  • Amaya at Hotel Santa Fe, the Hacienda and Spa
  • Anasazi Restaurant at Rosewood Inn
  • Cowgirl BBQ
  • Luminaria Restaurant and Patio at Inn and Spa at Loretto
  • Second Street Brewery
  • Terra Restaurant at Four Seasons Rancho Encantado
Fuego at La Posada and Mineshaft Tavern in Madrid will also compete for green chile cheeseburger supremacy after Carlos D of 93.3 KKOB FM’s top-rated morning show, The Morning Mayhem, announced this morning a tie between the two restaurants for the Lucky No. 7 spot. The radio DJ sampled burgers from each of the Smackdown’s nominated restaurants--including Agave, Blue Corn Brewery, BODY café, Caffé Greco, La Casa Sena, Del Charro, Las Fuentes, and Rio Chama--in search of the final entrant, the Lucky No. 7. But after scoring each burger for appearance, ease of eating, quality of ingredients, melding of flavors, and chile flavor—Fuego and Mineshaft topped the DJ’s score sheets with an identical tally. Both restaurants will advance as Lucky No. 7s.

The eight finalists light their grills on Sept. 12 and concoct their perfect variation of their green chile cheeseburger. Food critics Gustavo Arellano of OC Weekly and syndicated columnist of “Ask A Mexican”, Teresa Farney of The Colorado Springs Gazette, Cheryl Jamison, James Beard Award-winning cookbook author, Elaine Johnson of Sunset magazine, Pat Sharpe of Texas Monthly--will select the Reigning Chomp, while those who purchase tickets for the event can cast their votes for the People’s Choice Award.

In its second year, the Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown pays homage to this mouthwatering union of an awesome American classic and a palate-punching New Mexico staple. This ultimate feast has long divided Santa Fean burger-fanatics and eater-heavyweights over the claims of chow down dominance.

To purchase tickets for the Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown, visit www.santafe.org. Every ticket buys seven samples from each chef—roughly the equivalent of two full burgers—a locally-crafted beer from Second Street Brewery, and a vote in the People’s Choice Award.
