Visiting Santa Fe

2015 May, Call for New Mexico Artists

May 7, 2015: The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission’s Community Gallery seeks artists working with both formal portraiture techniques as well as investigating the ubiquitous “selfie” in social media. Interested artists in all media are encouraged to submit portfolios of five to ten 8 1/2” x 11” printed images of their work, an artist statement, resume and/or bio for consideration and a cover letter explaining their interest in participating in “NARCISSUS,” the winter 2015 exhibit. Portfolios should be sent to Rod Lambert, Community Gallery Manager, City of Santa Fe Arts Commission, PO Box 909, Santa Fe, NM 87504 by, June 19, 2015 for consideration.

In a coincidence, this initiative is announced the same week that ranked Santa Fe as the top U.S. capital city for selfies, partly a result of the powerful Santa Fe Instagram community and the beautiful scenery and sunshine throughout the New Mexico state capital.

“Selfie” was recently added to the Oxford Dictionary, indicative of the rise of social media. Tips for taking a successful selfie abound, while the nuisance of selfie-sticks are driving museums worldwide to ban their use. Psychologists and mental health professionals speculate that the growing pervasiveness of digital self-portraits is creating a society of narcissists. Other studies indicate that not only are selfies masking low self-esteem, but may be a root cause for it.

Yet does this phenomenon differ dramatically from the historic role of portraiture in conveying an idealized identity? Has digital culture democratized what was once the sole purview of leaders, dignitaries and the aristocracy? “NARCISSUS” will explore the historical legacy of the portrait and its present role in modern culture.

The Community Gallery is planning the exhibit to run from November 13, 2015 – February 12, 2016. Artists will be notified of their participation by the end of August, 2015.
