Santa Fe Fiber Arts Festival

El Rancho de las Golondrinas is a Spanish Colonial ranch and living history museum, with an extensive and vibrant “sheep to blanket” weaving program. At this special weekend event on May 18 and 19, the weavers and other expertswill share their knowledge and demonstrate their skills in the world of fiber arts.
At this event, visitors can enjoy demonstrations on:
• Shearing churro sheep by hand
• Herding sheep with border collies
• Washing and dying wool with natural ingredients
• Carding and spinning using traditional techniques
• Weaving on beam and upright (“Navajo”) looms
• New Mexican colcha embroidery
• A fiber arts market featuring wool products, fiber arts supplies and hand-made clothing 2
and art from local providers and artisans
• Demonstrations by renowned Navajo weaver Pearl Sunrise on Saturday
• “Cochineal: A Perfect Red” presented by Peter Lipscomb, NM State Parks, on Saturday
• Presentation and demonstrations on Native American Pueblo weaving techniques by Luis
Garcia (Tiwa/Piro) on Sunday
• Hands-on crafts for kids and adults on weaving, felting and more

The Institute of American Indian Arts has a straightforward and powerful mission: to empower creativity and leadership in Native arts and cultures through higher education, lifelong learning and outreach. To accomplish this, the college offers both two and four year degrees in creative writing, Indigenous liberal studies, museum studies, new media arts, and studio arts.
The only school in the state of New Mexico to have National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredidation, the Institute is open to anyone. One does not have to be enrolled in an American Indian tribe to attend.
