Cast Glass Workshops with Maya Tile / May 2013 Maya Tile is now offering cast glass workshops in the art of casting glass. We have recently moved into our new space in Santa Fe, at Lamesadevenn. Ryan Helean, co-owner of Maya Tile, is leading the cast glass workshops. Ryans years of artistic experience and gentle teaching demeanor create a teaching environment free of ridicule. Ryan brings to the classroom seven years of casting experience and his ability to make rubber molds. We welcome students of all ages (we may be offering kids classes soon!) and all levels of experience or no experience at all. Come out of the cast glass class with your own finished glass sculpture to take home.
We are offering 3 different workshops at very reasonable prices:
First, three-day workshop:
Cast your own crystal sculpture
Learn the art of open faced molds
Learn how to work with wax
After third session you will have your very own Cast Glass Sculpture to take with you!
Each session is a three hour class.
Second, one-day workshop:
Create your own open faced rubber mold
Build a pour box for sculpture
Mix rubber and preserve your creation for all time
Suggested that you take first workshop so you will have original wax to work from.
This is a five hour class.
Third, four-day workshop:
Create a three dimensional sculpture
Learn the art of sprueing your sculpture
Walk away with finished sculpture
Each workshop will run four hours.
Each class has a 1 hour break for lunch, with an optional catered lunch available for an extra $15/class.

The Hank Williams Tribute Brunch with Cathy Faber’s Swingin’ Country Band - In a short career that spanned only from 1946 to 1952, Hank Williams was widely considered country music’s first superstar. He was instrumental in turning “hillbilly” music into “country” music, and his songs are still covered by major recording artists and widely enjoyed 60 years after his death. Cathy Faber’s Swingin’ Country Band is happy to be playing songs written and covered by the late Hank Williams every Sunday afternoon in May. Cathy will take on the role of “Henrietta” Williams and sing lead vocals while playing upright bass, accompanied by George Langston on guitar, Dave Devlin on steel, Pat Mahoney on fiddle, and Chris Carpenter on drums. We think you’ll enjoy the timeless nature of this music, brought to you by some of the finest musicians of this genre in the Southwest.

Intensive: Black-and-White Photography Using Photoshop with Rick Allred /May 25 - May 27, 2013 Black-and-white photography is an ideal and timeless vehicle for enhancing the beauty of almost any subject matter. It highlights composition, intensifies texture, and evokes the visual essence of the subject. For the modern photographer who wants to elevate their level of expertise in this classic medium, theres no better or more accessible tool than Adobe Photoshop.
Join Rick for two-and-a-half days focused on the Photoshop featuresboth introductory and intermediatethat allow you to significantly improve your black-and-white imagery and effectively transform your color images into black-and-white. Using a basic conversion to move from color to black and white can result in photographs that are visually bland. To combat this, we learn how to analyze and utilize the color information present in our image files. We also explore and work with the Photoshop tools and layering techniques that aid us in bolstering compositional strengths while toning down areas of distraction, to more elegantly guide viewers eyes through our images.
With patience and an infectiously enthusiastic approach, Rick leads participants through a series of hands-on demonstrations, practical lab exercises, and detailed explanations of specialized techniques. Take time out to give your skills a jump-start in the artistically rewarding field of digital black-and-white photography.

Hailing from Santa Fe, New Mexico, The Bus Tapes are a fun and energetic band that have been entertaining local crowds since 2008. Their rhythmic, acoustic feel on top of relatable, sing-a-long song writing is the leading tone behind their collaborative music. Folks enjoy their interactive, friendly show, and appreciate the varying types of music – The Bus Tapes mix it up. One tune might be a funky R&B cover, the next a happy folk song, and the one after that a down-beat ballad. Members include Heather Tanner – Guitar and Vocals, Case Tanner – Bass Guitar, David Gold – Lead Guitar, and Milton Villarubia – Drums.

Ten years ago, after finishing a degree in music and business, Coles Whalen decided to sell everything she had in order to buy a camper. This camper became her home as she toured the nation selling her first record Coles Whalen EP (2005) soon followed by Gee Baby (2006) - her first full length album. Whalen found a way into Borders bookstores and spent almost four years playing multiple shows a day in Borders across the US, building a following and selling over 10,000 CDs right out of her truck. In 2007 Whalen signed with an independent label and released Nothing Is Too Much (2007). After a year, she found herself in a corner. The label owned the masters, couldn't afford to print more copies and had her legally bound for two additional records. Having no other option Whalen regrouped, bought herself out of contract, and began again. Whalen moved from her hometown of Denver, CO to Nashville, TN to work on her songwriting. She continued to tour out of music city, playing around 100 shows a year and wrote and released her 4th CD, The Whistle Stop Road Record (2009), which includes co writes with some of Nashville’s best, among them Rob Crosby and Keith Stegall. Accomplishing all she set out to do in music city, Whalen headed back to Denver, where she was embraced by her hometown scene. She continued to play hundreds of shows each year including opening appearances with Pat Benatar, Joan Jett and Kellie Pickler. During breaks in the show schedule she managed to record and release her 5th record, I Wrote This for You (2012), which has been heard on La Galere (Paper Airplane) and seen on CMC (Call on Me, music video). With plans to release another record late in 2013, Whalen is slowing down the show schedule a little and writing like crazy! Shows are popping up for spring and summer though, she can’t stay still for TOO long, so keep an eye oncoleswhalen.com for the dates!

Zoobiquity: What Dolphin Diabetes Can Teach Us About Human Health Dinosaurs suffered from brain cancer, arthritis, and gout. Koalas catch Chlamydia. Gorillas experience clinical depression. Stallions self-harm in a way that correlates to “cutting” for human patients. Animals and humans get the same diseases, yet physicians and veterinarians rarely talk. Drawing on the latest in medical and veterinary science, as well as evolutionary and molecular biology, Barbara Natterson-Horowitz proposes an interdisciplinary, comparative approach to physical and behavioral health for doctors treating patients of all species, and shows us how animal medicine might help us all feel better.
Barbara Natterson-Horowitz, M.D., is an attending cardiologist at the UCLA Medical Center and a professor of medicine for the UCLA Division of Cardiology. She serves as a cardiovascular consultant to the Los Angeles Zoo and is a member of its Medical Advisory Board. Imagine you’re back in time enjoying the groove and virtuosity of 70’s art-rock band, then hurled decades forward, colliding with the energy and intensity of today’s indie rock scene. There’s unexpectedly powerful jazzy female vocals intertwined with a strong, satin-smooth male voice. Thumping synth basslines and popping, funky drumbeats drive the skillfully intricate guitar playing and explosions of electric violin string-shredding. Reflecting their influences of past and present (including Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, the Talking Heads, Arcade Fire, and the White Stripes), the StereoFidelics avoid performing with loops, computers, and digital effects in favor of the more organic approach of using Moog Taurus pedals, scat vocal solos, and multi-instrumentalism. You see, the fast-fingered guitar player (Chris Padgett) keeps the basslines pounding through a one-octave floor keyboard, the tiny female vocalist (Melissa McGi nley) is also the drummer; he sings too, and she plays violin. They perform with a natural passion and synchronicity that not only dispels any association with the herky-jerky one-man-band cliché, but post-performance, leaves their audience sympathetically exhausted and dripping with sweat. Known for booking their own tours, designing album covers, screen printing tour t-shirts, and even making some of their onstage clothing, StereoF is a do-all whirlwind of creative energy. Relentless touring of the US and calling their van home for much of the time (performing around 200 shows per year) has gained the StereoFidelics a dedicated following around the country. Their recent studio release, You Are Having a Wonderful Time, receives solid airplay from college and community radio stations coast-to-coast. They have performed at clubs and festivals with Love Tractor, Future Man, Donna the Buffalo, Enter the Haggis, Rubblebucket,, That 1 Guy, and Jackyl among others. Chris Pa dgett–electric guitar, acoustic guitar, foot-operated synth-bass, vocals Melissa McGinley–electric violin, drums, vocals Melissa’s 5-string electric violin is a NS Designs CR-5

Eight Modern is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition,Fay Ku: Asa Nisa Masa. Ku stages mythic tableaus of transformation and tension performed by young women (and the occasional boy). The refinement and subtlety of Ku's technique offer an arresting contrast to the raw psychological charge of the scenes she depicts.
Ku is inspired by what she calls the “residues” of human culture. “Problematic relationships and issues of socialization are central themes in my work: stories, myths and things witnessed inspire me,” Ku says. “I never have any preconceived notion of what the work will look like, and I never sketch beforehand. I work to discover what I am thinking, and I have to find my way to the image.”
Working from her imagination, Ku starts by drawing a face, then adds and erases until her ideas coalesce on paper.
“I grew up in two cultures as the child of Chinese immigrants raised in all-white American suburbs,” Ku says. “The intersection of the personal, social and cultural is where my work lives.”
Ku explains the exhibition title Asa Nisa Masa: “It's from Fellini's 8½, where the Fellini-like protagonist remembers when, as a child, he is told the magic words to make a painting come to life at midnight,” Ku explains. “Also, if you take the ‘sa' off the end of each nonsense word, it spells ‘anima.'”
The reference to ‘anima' is fitting, as she utilizes zoomorphism and id-driven characters to examine social norms and human interactions.
Born in Taiwan, Ku moved to America when she was three. Her bold use of negative space and clean, calligraphic line recall traditional Asian art, while her focus on the figure is more characteristic of American art. Conflict pervades her work, as her line is both urgent and graceful; her images are violent yet coolly stylized.
Ku earned an M.S. in Art History and an M.F.A. in Studio Art from the Pratt Institute. She earned a dual B.A. in literature and visual arts from Bennington College. Ku has been awarded numerous residencies from organizations such as the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Santa Fe Art Institute, the National Performance Network, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art. Currently based in Brooklyn, the artist has also received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the A.I.R. Emerging Artist Fellowship, the National Performance Network and the Urban Artists Initiative. Her work resides in the collections of the Asian American Art Centre in New York, The Contemporary Museum in Hawaii, the New Britain Museum of American Art and the University of New Mexico Art Museum.

Shading Techniques in Tapestry with Elizabeth Buckley /June 1 - 4, 2013 Use of shading techniques can expand the yarn color palette without having to dye so many colors. In this workshop, we will explore how to create value changes using woven techniques based on gradations of dots and lines. We will engage in a deeper exploration of weaving shapes within shapes through the use of different types of hachures to outline and define forms, or to create transparency. We also will incorporate use of color blending achieved through the use of multiple wefts in a single bundle. Whether weaving from the front or the back of the tapestry, the possibilities are endless for creating depth in space, three-dimensionality, and shapes merging into other forms. This class is for intermediate level students who are familiar with basic tapestry techniques.

Millett has spent the majority of his career making large scale metal sculptures that explore the abstraction of both figurative movement and geometry. However, many of these complex creations start from ideas hashed out in wood, small scale, with vibrant monochromatic color schemes. This exhibition presents a collection of these small wooden sculptures for the wall and pedestal. Each piece has a dynamic compositional element that inspires visual interest and translates to the monumental, yet was made for an intimate view.
Based in Seattle WA, Millett has exhibited widely over the past 30 plus years. With family in Santa Fe, Chiaroscuro has become his home-away-from-home gallery and has helped develop a significant local following. This is Millett's second solo exhibition at Chiaroscuro.

Henrieke I. Streckerhas her roots in the Black Forest of southwestern Germany. Her formative and creative years were spent there, and later in Berlin and Frankfurt. In 2008 she relocated to the United States and currently resides and works in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. She has spent her lifetime in photography and alternative photographic techniques. Henrieke's work appears in photographic journals, catalogues, blogs and in books on photographic practices. She teaches The Art of Photography (analog photography)&Historic Photographic Processes at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire.
Henrieke Strecker's photogravures and mixed media images rarely have titles. It is her goal to entice the viewer to become an active observer, to respond to the image so as to find his or her own meaning---presumably a new and very personal tale. Thus, she doesn't document an isolated moment as a documentary photographer would nor does she paint a realistic picture, for Henrieke, this type of photographic rendition is too much like a report. Instead, she gives an account of small movements and atmospheres thereby sharing her experience with the viewer. Her technique requires her to remain still, in her own yard, in one place, and quietly allow her perceptions to emerge --- "to go deeper - unearthing, layer after layer, exposing the fields of vision hidden well beneath the surface." The core of her work is both visual and graphic, simplicity derived from her natural surroundings.
Maggie Tayloris exhibiting both new work and a selection of images from No Ordinary Days, her recent book that is a survey for Maggie's art for the period 1998 through 2012. Maggie continues her characteristic style of scanning and enhancing daguerreotypes, tintypes, figurines, illustrations and photographs for which she then creates surrealistic settings for the featured portrait.
The portraits that Maggie uses for her photomontages, the daguerreotypes and the tintypes, are 19th Century pictures. The technical limitations of the medium at the time, the "film" that captured the subject of the photographs, was slow, not very light sensitive. Often the taking of a picture took several seconds, even minutes. While the lens cap was removed from the camera the photographic subjects were required to sit or stand, perfectly motionless, until the lens cap was replaced on the camera. Photographers used specially made props such as the Brady Stand, a 19th century factory made cast iron side table to act as a prop and to assist the subject to be still. Photographers also learned that a smile was always in motion. Pictures of those who smiled rendered the face blurred and the photo was useless. Hence, the portrait subject was admonished not to move, not to smile, not to blink, and, most importantly, not to change their expression. The subjects dressed for this special occasion presenting themselves for the camera in their best, probably their only formal wear. The clothing was dark, often black, creating a setting that had a funereal air or suggesting the subject was suffering some anguish or discomfort. If the photograph was taken in a studio there would be props, such as a table, sofas, stools, and chair, and perhaps a backdrop, a pastoral setting of trees or the like as the hand painted backdrops found on a stage. Rarely does anyone know the name of the person who was photographed. That identity has long been lost to posterity. Finally, the print made of the subject was totally without color, ashen --- just shades of gray. Consequently, these 19th Century portraits took on a stilted stoic and stiff expression, and worst of all, they were gray. No one ever looked happy; they couldn't smile. In her book, Maggie Taylor's Landscape of Dreams, Maggie shows us four examples of original daguerreotypes and tintypes as she collected them and then how she reconstructs them as her own art.

Ruth Duckworth was born in Germany in 1919, where, as a young woman of Jewish descent during the Nazi regime, she was not permitted to attend art school. Thankfully, she moved to England for art school where she discovered her great passion: sculpting abstracted line and form with clay. Early on, Duckworth exercised an independent mind by using a medium that was not recognized within the pantheon of “high art.” In doing so, she pioneered a new way of thinking about ceramics and the formalism of pure abstraction. Clearly influenced by the Romanian modernist sculptor Constantin Brancusi, as well as deeply moved by the ancient art of the Cycladic culture that preceded that of classical Greece, Duckworth developed her own abstractly elegant language. As Harmony Hammond noted in her review in Art in America (November 2010), “There is no clutter, no sentimentality or nostalgia…. The work … is deceptively simple. Had she sculpted primarily in a medium other than clay, Duckworth would have undoubtedly received greater attention in her lifetime.” Nonetheless, she hardly went unnoticed: Bellas Artes has been exhibiting work by the artist for nearly three decades. Beginning in 2005, a museum retrospective toured Duckworth's art in seven US cities.
In 1964, Duckworth moved to Chicago from England. She settled in Chicago and lived there until her death in 2009 at the age of 90—her indomitable spirit had her sculpting into the last year of her life. Duckworth's art never settled into one genre; it continued to evolve and change throughout six decades of practice, though she confined herself to three-dimensional work in clay, stone and bronze—creating commissioned wall reliefs, primarily in porcelain and stoneware, at such sites as government and university buildings, and for banks, private individuals, churches and synagogues. Her maquettes, which she made as models for many of these commissions, will be shown at the upcoming exhibition, including the last piece she made. These maquettes have never been offered for sale until now.
Duckworth said, “Play is the essence of creativity—creative play and gut reaction, instinct…. You have to be spontaneous and trust yourself.” Her spontaneity was based on a sharply honed sense of her art. Soon after arriving in England to study art, Duckworth worked as a stonemason. Carving into stone or clay, using a reductive process that would come to reveal the underlying forms she desired to expose, she employed a highly tactile and organic style that was always abstract, no matter how much it referenced the natural world. She played, with great success, with the tensions inherent in paradox—volume gives way to negative space, light to shadow, and solidly functional surfaces slip into a deliciously sensuous tactility.

The exhibition opens April 19 and runs through September 8, 2013. For almost four decades, Clift has photographed two monolithic sites that dominate their expansive landscapes: Shiprock, an eroded volcanic form that rises above the northwestern New Mexico desert and is sacred to the Navajo (Diné), and Mont St. Michel, a tidal island off the north coast of France that is famous for its Romanesque-Gothic church and monastery. In this selection of more than seventy beautiful photographs, Clift shares his ongoing, nuanced exploration of the two places.
