Millett has spent the majority of his career making large scale metal sculptures that explore the abstraction of both figurative movement and geometry. However, many of these complex creations start from ideas hashed out in wood, small scale, with vibrant monochromatic color schemes. This exhibition presents a collection of these small wooden sculptures for the wall and pedestal. Each piece has a dynamic compositional element that inspires visual interest and translates to the monumental, yet was made for an intimate view.
Based in Seattle WA, Millett has exhibited widely over the past 30 plus years. With family in Santa Fe, Chiaroscuro has become his home-away-from-home gallery and has helped develop a significant local following. This is Millett's second solo exhibition at Chiaroscuro.

Albuquerque artist Kevin Tolman builds his rich mixed-media abstractions with gestural sheets of vibrant acrylic colors through an application of scratching, scraping and drawing along the way. Many aspects from these under-paintings are revealed or obscured as the piece progresses. It is, he admits, a pursuit of serendipity. “I see our world as being very cyclical, random patterned, and profuse in nature. It is also an incredibly layered and thickly complex place that I find interesting and exquisitely beautiful. My visual experience is something I obviously can't help but bring to my work.”

EVOKE Contemporary, 130 Lincoln Avenue, Suite F, Santa Fe introduces new artist, SEAN CHEETHAM on Friday, May 3rd from 5-7pm through May 31. Primarily a figurative painter, Sean is known for his technical prowess in achieving accuracy and harmony in his alla prima paintings which he credits to a deep understanding of drawing and his own system of mixing colors which he uses adeptly to govern shadows, midtones and highlights. In addition to having an exceptional ability to understand, draw, and paint the human form, Cheetham's selection of subjects typically in familiar urban scenes contributes a truthful and often raw spirit that make his work distinctive and contemporary testimonies of our time.

Henrieke I. Streckerhas her roots in the Black Forest of southwestern Germany. Her formative and creative years were spent there, and later in Berlin and Frankfurt. In 2008 she relocated to the United States and currently resides and works in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. She has spent her lifetime in photography and alternative photographic techniques. Henrieke's work appears in photographic journals, catalogues, blogs and in books on photographic practices. She teaches The Art of Photography (analog photography)&Historic Photographic Processes at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire.
Henrieke Strecker's photogravures and mixed media images rarely have titles. It is her goal to entice the viewer to become an active observer, to respond to the image so as to find his or her own meaning---presumably a new and very personal tale. Thus, she doesn't document an isolated moment as a documentary photographer would nor does she paint a realistic picture, for Henrieke, this type of photographic rendition is too much like a report. Instead, she gives an account of small movements and atmospheres thereby sharing her experience with the viewer. Her technique requires her to remain still, in her own yard, in one place, and quietly allow her perceptions to emerge --- "to go deeper - unearthing, layer after layer, exposing the fields of vision hidden well beneath the surface." The core of her work is both visual and graphic, simplicity derived from her natural surroundings.
Maggie Tayloris exhibiting both new work and a selection of images from No Ordinary Days, her recent book that is a survey for Maggie's art for the period 1998 through 2012. Maggie continues her characteristic style of scanning and enhancing daguerreotypes, tintypes, figurines, illustrations and photographs for which she then creates surrealistic settings for the featured portrait.
The portraits that Maggie uses for her photomontages, the daguerreotypes and the tintypes, are 19th Century pictures. The technical limitations of the medium at the time, the "film" that captured the subject of the photographs, was slow, not very light sensitive. Often the taking of a picture took several seconds, even minutes. While the lens cap was removed from the camera the photographic subjects were required to sit or stand, perfectly motionless, until the lens cap was replaced on the camera. Photographers used specially made props such as the Brady Stand, a 19th century factory made cast iron side table to act as a prop and to assist the subject to be still. Photographers also learned that a smile was always in motion. Pictures of those who smiled rendered the face blurred and the photo was useless. Hence, the portrait subject was admonished not to move, not to smile, not to blink, and, most importantly, not to change their expression. The subjects dressed for this special occasion presenting themselves for the camera in their best, probably their only formal wear. The clothing was dark, often black, creating a setting that had a funereal air or suggesting the subject was suffering some anguish or discomfort. If the photograph was taken in a studio there would be props, such as a table, sofas, stools, and chair, and perhaps a backdrop, a pastoral setting of trees or the like as the hand painted backdrops found on a stage. Rarely does anyone know the name of the person who was photographed. That identity has long been lost to posterity. Finally, the print made of the subject was totally without color, ashen --- just shades of gray. Consequently, these 19th Century portraits took on a stilted stoic and stiff expression, and worst of all, they were gray. No one ever looked happy; they couldn't smile. In her book, Maggie Taylor's Landscape of Dreams, Maggie shows us four examples of original daguerreotypes and tintypes as she collected them and then how she reconstructs them as her own art.

New Mexicans have always made art—we have always made aestheticized objects that reflect our world views. From beautifully made, 14,000-year-old Paleo-Indian tools to contemporary imagery, New Mexico art has reflected our changing technologies, embodied our ways of making a living, and personified our spirituality.
And where else but New Mexico has art reflected everything from the creators of stone tools to the invention of the atomic bomb?
Curated by Joseph Traugott, Ph.D., the museum's curator of twentieth century art, the exhibition begins with the earliest yet-discovered art—Clovis points—and proceeds in an unbroken continuum to the present.

A newly orchestrated version of John Donald Robb’s Requiem will be performed by the New Mexico Bach Society. The rarely performed St. Cecilia Mass by Charles Gounod also will be on the program. The performances will be presented by the New Mexico Performing Arts Society and will feature top-tier professional musicians now living in New Mexico. Franz Vote, a celebrated conductor who spent years with the Metropolitan Opera, will be conducting both pieces.
The Requiem was completed in 1985 when Robb, former dean of the UNM College of Fine Arts and a prolific composer, was 93. It was his last major composition and was written, “In Memory of Mother, Father, and Eight Brothers & Sisters”. It originally had been scored for a large orchestra and chorus, but for the Santa Fe concert has been re-scored for a smaller orchestra. Gounod, a French composer, completed the highly acclaimed St. Cecilia Mass in 1854, when he was 36. The piece established him as a noteworthy composer.

Geraint, Susan and I wanted to thank you for the wonderful day we were able to spend with you last Wednesday. Thanks for so many things - for showing us how to use our camera features more efficiently, for new ways of "seeing" a subject, balance and composition - we could go on and on! We have lived in NM most of our lives but had never seen many of the places you took us. The weather was stunning - thunder clouds, rainbows, mountain villages. It was a day that we were trulyfilled with wonder at all we saw! You were so very patient with us as we would try to grasp concepts that come naturally to you. And I know that you went "beyond the call of duty" as evening and night fell, trying to get an uncooperative Photoshop program to stay in raw mode. Please thank your daughter for us for keeping you so late! And finally, it was a pleasure to get to know you as a person, not just a photographer. Thank you for sharing a day with us.Mark and Susan, Maine

After a successful year at their Lincoln Avenue location, Pippin Contemporary is making a triumphant return this May to where itall began—Canyon Road. Situated on the coveted corner of Canyon Road and Paseo de Peralta, Pippin’s new space will anchor the famed art road, leading the pack with an expanded inventory and sculpture garden.
In celebration of their relocation to 200 Canyon Road, Pippin Contemporary is introducing some fresh creative talent to the gallery. Sculptors Jim LaPaso, Nic Nobilque, Troy Pillow, and Greg Reiche will all be showing their work in the new location. Each artist brings a unique aesthetic sensibility to the table that both complements and enhances the gallery’s existing oeuvre.
Jim LaPaso’s kinetic sculptures represent an exciting addition to Pippin Contemporary’s artistic roster. LaPaso’s pieces are explorations of the intersection between movement and balance. Buoyant and dynamic, the sculptures undergo continual transformation and take on a life of their own as they are in constant conversation and connection with their surroundings.
Abstract sculptor Nic Noblique will also be showing in Pippin Contemporaryʼs new sculpture garden. Despite being made from heavy salvaged steel, his
designs appear bouncy, radiant, and airy. Sweeping lines coil and entwine around one another, providing the sculptures with a dramatic presence that
challenges the eye to see in new ways.
Greg Reicheʼs sculptures are meditations on the relationships between nature and human consciousness. Monoliths, wedges, and arcs are prominent in Reicheʼs repertoire and provide visual strength to his pieces. Blending elemental forms with contemporary design, Reicheʼs sculptures serve as expressions of connectivity and collective identity.
Seattle-based artist Troy Pillow also creates sculptures inspired by organic and geometric forms. By incorporating both metal and glass into his designs, Pillowʼs pieces “create a union of ease between modern design and nature, blending fluidity with their environment and elements.” Kinetic factors serve to heighten the visual impression of the sculptures, as “both viewer and sculptor react to the same force.” The evocative simplicity of Pillowʼs modernist aesthetic imbues his work with a sense of fluidity, harmony, and elegance.
Pippin Contemporary will be relocating to 200 Canyon Road on May 1st, 2013.

featuring seventy Belisama student dancers, with original choreography by the School’s Artistic Director Annie Kohn; instructors Tara Debevec and Jonathan Guise; graduating seniors Amanda Schulhofer and Hannah Sachs; and Founder and Company Director Adrienne Bellis. The evening presents dancers age four to twenty-three in modern, jazz, contemporary ballet, and Irish dances. The School’s philosophy—as demonstrated by the Repertory performance—centers on the individuality, uniqueness of expression, well-rounded lifestyle, and health of each student, with learning through dance in a supportive environment.
A highlight of this year’s concert is the diverse and lighthearted swing set, which includes an Andrews Sisters-inspired Irish trio set to the famous, upbeat ‘Bugle Boy,’ and a somber contemporary ballet for an Amon Tobin song. Judy Garland's ‘Get Happy’ accompanies a cheerful jazz dance performed by beginning teen Kick Start students, “although you wouldn't guess that they just started dancing this year!” said Artistic Director Annie Kohn. Kohn recalls early memories singing and dancing to Garland herself; as a result, choreographing this dance and working with new teen students has been “a really sweet process” for the Santa Fe-born choreographer. “I have absolutely loved working with the Kick Start group, and am so pleased we are now offering a class at Belisama that is programmed especially for teens who’ve always wanted to study dance.”
Offering a classic aesthetic, advanced level student ballet ‘Fly’ is performed to a beautiful arrangement by Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi. The dancers’ movements are at times inspired by the music, and at other moments provide contrast with fast, sharp contemporary steps. Kohn said: “When I’m choreographing for a group, I'll sometimes begin by making a phrase of movement and then use it as a palette to play with.” Following this method in the development of her choreography allows Kohn “space to work ‘in the moment’,” and also inspires her students to share their own ideas in the creative process.
Young dancers in the contemporary school share a circus-themed dance that is sweet, funny, mysterious, and “sure to bring a smile to anyone's face,” said Kohn. “I know I am on the right path with a piece when the students are so excited that they don't want to leave at the end of class!” Music includes DeVotchKa, Rachel Portman, and songs from Cirque du Soleil.
This year’s five graduating seniors, Marisa Graham, Rhiannon Johnson, Hannah Sachs, Amanda Schulhofer, and Alejandra Vazquez Bauer, are alumnae of Charisma Dance Company and have been dancing together for twelve years. Belisama's spring concert will be their final event as a group; the seniors will perform special choreography by Kohn, Sachs, and Schulhofer. Schulhofer has selected a song by twenty-seven year old Icelandic instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds for her dance, and describes the concept of her composition as “mostly about finding the motivation to keep moving forward, when you reach that point where you feel like giving up—despite how close you are to achieving your goals.” She names dance as a source of energy and inspiration in her life: “Choreographing for my classmates has really proven to me how much we all support each other.” In regard to the seniors’ performances, “their growth and maturity shines,” Kohn praised.
ABOUT BELISAMA DANCE:
School Artistic Director Annie Kohn is a Santa Fe native; she has trained with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Moving People Dance, and under the private mentorship of Mary Anne Santos Newhall. Kohn received her BFA magna cum laude in Dance with a focus on Choreography from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. She has performed works by many respected choreographers, including Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, Donald McKayle, and Bebe Miller. She has been a company member of Robert Wood Dance New York/Santa Fe since 2009, and continues to choreograph and teach as well as perform.

Born of blood, sweat and tears, The Strange is the culmination of many lives who have influenced what would become one of The Southwest's most creative and hard-working true rock acts. Described as "young outlaws" the members of The Strange have battled through many a hardship and hurdle in the process of bringing their brand of "desert rock" to the ears of the region. With no official source of support, the band has managed to tour extensively across the Southwest, West Coast, and Texas as well as having landed some impressive gigs in their hometown. Justin Lindsey's honest songwriting accented by the powerful and soulful sound that Daniel Murphy, Andy Diekmann and Braden Anderson provide create a familiar, yet exciting new rock experience.www.strangerocknroll.com

Cast Glass Workshops with Maya Tile / May 2013 Maya Tile is now offering cast glass workshops in the art of casting glass. We have recently moved into our new space in Santa Fe, at Lamesadevenn. Ryan Helean, co-owner of Maya Tile, is leading the cast glass workshops. Ryans years of artistic experience and gentle teaching demeanor create a teaching environment free of ridicule. Ryan brings to the classroom seven years of casting experience and his ability to make rubber molds. We welcome students of all ages (we may be offering kids classes soon!) and all levels of experience or no experience at all. Come out of the cast glass class with your own finished glass sculpture to take home.
We are offering 3 different workshops at very reasonable prices:
First, three-day workshop:
Cast your own crystal sculpture
Learn the art of open faced molds
Learn how to work with wax
After third session you will have your very own Cast Glass Sculpture to take with you!
Each session is a three hour class.
Second, one-day workshop:
Create your own open faced rubber mold
Build a pour box for sculpture
Mix rubber and preserve your creation for all time
Suggested that you take first workshop so you will have original wax to work from.
This is a five hour class.
Third, four-day workshop:
Create a three dimensional sculpture
Learn the art of sprueing your sculpture
Walk away with finished sculpture
Each workshop will run four hours.
Each class has a 1 hour break for lunch, with an optional catered lunch available for an extra $15/class.

More than 200 museum-quality artists from over 40 tribes and pueblos will showcase and sell their pottery, jewelry, glass, painting, sculpture, carvings, textiles and other art, Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26 at the Santa Fe Convention Center. Sandia Shuttle and the Inn at Loretto are offering special Native Treasures discounts to people traveling to Santa Fe in support of the festival.
The show’s organizers work year-round scouting and recruiting new talent each year. New and top artists this year include 2013 Native Treasures featured artist Tammy Garcia, Robin Waynee, DY Begay, Autumn Borts-Medlock, Les Namingha, Dominique Toya, Keri Ataumbi, Ernest & Veronica Benally, Maria Samora, Roxanne Swentzell (2011 Featured Artist), Ed Archie NoiseCat, Nocona Burgess, Yellowman, Charlene Holy Bear, Mona Laughing, and Robert Tenorio.
“Robin Waynee’s work is contemporary, exquisitely crafted and inspirational to wear,” says Karen Freeman, co-chair of Native Treasures. “She has won numerous awards at Indian Market and was the first Native American to capture the Grand Prize at the 2012 Saul Bell Design Award, the ‘Oscar’ of international jewelry awards. We are thrilled to welcome Robin and all of the amazing talent we will have at the 2013 Native Treasures show. Their participation will make the show even more special for Native Treasures attendees.”
Proceeds from Native Treasures provide the primary funding for exhibits at Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC). While the museum receives N.M. state funds for operating expenses, all exhibit funding must be raised privately. Artists generously donate a portion of their sales to MIAC.

Hear the soul in every note…see the soul in every expression……feel the soul in every show….There isn’t a single moment that isn’t fully encompassed with passion and authenticity. You can tell that music isn’t everything to him, its the only thing. Robby Overfield is an musician who blends the art of storytelling and genuine lyrics with a powerful voice to compliment an encapsulating listening experience. Stretching his soulful Detroit, Michigan roots all the way to the rocky skyline of Durango, Colorado, Robby has continued to grow and expand his musical framework to include unique perspectives to his own life’s episodes and encounters. With a tremendous ability to captivate an audience through subtle build-ups and incredible delivery, his songs are bound to have folks walking away changed by the power of music and emotion. Robby will be the first to admit that these types of happen-stances don’t, in fact, “happen” overnight. In a 2010 interview, Overfield writes “Music is a process….it takes time to mature, change, evolve…If I have learned anything from my endeavors, its that everything deserves a chance in music just as it does in life….what doesn’t come around the first time may come back around when the timings right….like many other maturity stages in life….it needs time to grow and blossom……….”. And that is exactly what has happened with not only his style, but his stories. Robby and the Trio (Jesse Ogle – bass, Dave Rodriguez-drums) are currently finishing up their 6 track EP entitled “The Breaks”. Overfield describes the title to the EP an awakening of his life in a nut shell. “Every track in this EP ties into the bigger picture…and for me that has been my ability to catch, or not catch, the proverbial Breaks in life”. Overfie ld goes on to add. “Its hard not to pinpoint your personal sagas in music…I made a conscious decision to generalize the stuff I was writing because many of these core values are found in other people as well…..and I want them to feel a part of the stories….not just to move, but to be moved….walk away with a sense of ownership in the message.” So sit back, relax and let your mind, body and soul soak in with what this young man has to offer….you wont be disappointed.
