With a sound evolving from her early training in the classical world, Faith Amour has done studio work and also composed and performed with industry innovators across North America. The band includes John Rangel, piano, Justin Bransford, bass, John Trentacosta, drums, and Fred Simpson, percussion. June 19 - Santa Fe Great Big Jazz Band (Listen to an mp3 of "My Romance") Founded some twenty years ago to keep alive the tradition of jazz composed for large ensembles, the Santa Fe Great Big Jazz Band performs the classics of Count Basie, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, and others as well as newer charts by fine contemporary composers and arrangers such as Quincy Jones, Tom Kubis, and Gordon Goodwin. June 26 - Straight Up, with J Q Whitcomb and Brian Wingard (Listen to an mp3 of "Airport") Headlining this date are jazz trumpeter J Q Whitcomb, whose sound evokes adventures and romances, and saxophonist Brian Wingard, who Bobby Shew credits with having “great chops, ideas, and such positive energy.” They are backed up by Chris Ishee on piano, Colin Deuble on bass, and John Trentacosta on drums. Window on Lima: the Beltrán-Kropp Collection from Peru
Location: Museum of Spanish Colonial Arts 505-982.2226Event Type: art markets and galleries, community, culture, featured on homepage, homepage tabs, art, hp feature 2 b, to
The Spanish Colonial Arts Society announces the largest permanent gift of Peruvian art in its 88-year history. An exhibition of the gift items will open to the public June 22, 2013. The exhibition will include a permanent gift of 40 objects from Peru, as well as a number of objects from other countries collected by Pedro Gerardo Beltrán Espantoso, Peru’s Ambassador to the United States (1944-45) and Prime Minister of Peru (1959-1961), and his wife, Miriam Kropp Beltrán.
The donated art includes such important pieces as a rare reverse-painted glass frame from Cajamarca, Peru, an exquisite silver panel of Abraham, Isaac & Angel, and a table with marquetry of incised ivory & tortoise shell. Among the other items donated to the Society include the entire set of Beltrán custom-made and engraved cobalt blue and gold dinner service for 46 people.
“These pieces have never before been seen by the general public,” said Donna Pedace, Director of the Spanish Colonial Arts Society. “We look forward to sharing these wonderful additions to the colonial art collection owned by the Society. The exhibition will allow us to serve our 87-year old mission to preserve, promote and educate the public about the art of the Spanish Colonies, and also to highlight the extraordinary lives of Pedro and Miriam Beltrán.”
Pedro Beltrán was a descendent of a Spanish conquistador and a member of the Peruvian aristocracy. Educated at the London School of Economics (1918), Beltrán returned to Peru and was involved in business and politics before becoming the owner and publisher of the once-prominent newspaper, La Prensa (1934-1974).
Beltrán was the Minister of Finance and Prime Minister of Peru from 1959-1961. He received honorary degrees from Yale, Harvard, and the University of California, and was a visiting scholar at the University of Virginia. He was also awarded the Maria Moors Cabot prize from Columbia University’s School of Journalism. The Inter-American Press Society honored him as “Hero of Freedom of the Press” for his opposition to the Odria dictatorship in the 1950s.
The Beltráns moved from Peru in 1974 and relocated to Miriam’s family home on Russian Hill in San Francisco. They continued to travel the world and spent considerable time in Europe until Pedro’s death in 1979.
“This will help highlight the unique attributes and qualities of New Mexico’s Spanish Colonial art in the context of our role in the Spanish Colonial Empire, worldwide,” said John Schaefer, owner of Peyton Wright Gallery, one of the country’s largest dealers in Spanish Colonial Art. “Spanish Colonial art is the last great unexplored, undeveloped frontier in art in the world.”

This dream exceeded their ambitious expectations and today remains one of the top 60 PRCA Rodeos in the nation. Last year’s Rodeo de Santa Fe drew over 540 contestants, including World Champion cowboys Taos Muncy, Trevor Brazile and JW Harris – a roster we can expect to see grow this year.
Rodeo de Santa Fe is fun for the entire family, with many events for the little ones! The Mutton Bustin’ and youth barrel racers continue to be a crowd favorite of young and old alike! Not to mention the carnival midway, concessions, vendors and a beer garden.
In true rodeo fashion, the 64th Rodeo de Santa Fe will kick off with its annual parade in beautiful downtown Santa Fe on June 15th. Be sure to grab the kids and some lawn chairs and join the local community for a fun and exciting morning. Please visit the “Parade” tab for more information.
Each night the gates open at 5pm for dinner and shopping with our vendors. 6:30 starts the much-loved Mutton Bustin' event for our local children participants. At 7pm the Grand Entry parades into the arena. Exciting Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Team Roping, Barrel Racing, Steer Wrestling, Tie-Down Roping and Bareback Riding can be seen at every performance.

Concordia Santa Fe presents ‘Primary Colors'
Location: Saint Francis Auditorium (505) 476-5072Event Type: art markets and galleries, community, nonprofit, performing arts, todays events
Concordia Santa Fe will present its second full-ensemble concert of the 2013 season, entitled Primary Colors. Gary W. Hill, Director of Ensembles at Arizona State University, returns for his second engagement as guest conductor. The program features music of Percy Grainger, Charles Griffes, John Mackey, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Frank Ticheli.
With Gershwin-esque style, Frank Ticheli’s Blue Shades takes the wind orchestra on a rollicking joyride across the landscapes of jazz and blues styles. Blues harmonies, rhythms, and melodic idioms pervade the work; and many "shades of blue" are depicted, from bright, to dark, to dirty, to hot. At times, Blue Shades gives a nod to burlesque clichés from the Big Band era, not as a mockery of those conventions, but as a tribute. A slow and quiet middle section recalls the atmosphere of a dark, smoky blues haunt. An extended clarinet solo played near the end recalls Benny Goodman's hot playing style, and ushers in a series of "wailing" brass chords recalling the train whistle effects commonly used during that era.
Combining the heat of the Spanish dance and the energy of the Indy 500, John Mackey’s "Redline Tango" takes its title from the common term of "redlining an engine," or, pushing it to the limit. The first section is the initial virtuosic "redlining" section, with a gradual increase in intensity. After the peak comes the second section, the "tango," which is rather light but demented, and even a bit sleazy. A transition leads us back to an even "redder" version of the first section, with one final pop at the end.
Approaching dance music from a very different vantage point, Bob Margolis’s Color is based on tunes from Playford's English Dancing Master (1651) and Jr. Jacob van Eyck's Der Fluyten Lust-hof. Likewise, Percy Grainger’s Themes from “Green Bushes” is a passacaglia on the English folksong of the same name.
Additional works on the program include The White Peacock, by Charles Griffes, and Introduction and Wedding March from “The Golden Cockerel,” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Location: The Santa Fe PlazaEvent Type: community, entertainment and nightlife, family, festivals, todays events
Santa Fe Bandstand is a free summer music festival on the Santa Fe Plaza, produced by Outside In Productions and a crew that strives to present the city with a wide range of performers, who represent the diversity and wealth of musical talent in this region. Performances take place Monday to Friday, starting on June 21 through August 23, 2013. All shows are free and open to the public.
The Barefoot Movement: Americana. Straight to the Bandstand from their set at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, by way of Johnson City, Tennessee. "Call it folk, bluegrass, Americana, down home, back porch, NAC--whatever you like, just be sure to call it killer. If more Americana sounded like this, we'd be riding a folk music wave that hasn't been seen since the early 60s.” –Midwest Record
The Dunwells: Indie. All the way from Leeds, England. You’ve heard them on E-Town, you’ve seen them at SWSX and on The Tonight Show. The Dunwells are primed to take their music as far and wide as they can; one can hear that solidarity and aspiration in the music they create together. “We’re all in it for the same reason,” concludes David Dunwell. “We just love making music.” This will be a very special evening.

‘Humanity Exists in a State of Rupture from the World': Hegel, the Fall, and Spirit's Alienation fro
Location: St. John's College 505.984.6000Event Type: community, education lectures and workshops, nonprofit, spirituality and religion, todays events
The story of the Fall, especially in the Christian version that interprets it in terms of original sin, is a constant theme in Hegel’s writings. His interpretation of the Fall and of evil is not only interesting and original in its own right, but influences the manner in which Hegel comes to think of humanity’s alienation from nature. In this lecture, Raoni Padui will first attempt to explore Hegel’s reading as it appears in hisLectures on the Philosophy of Religion, with special attention to the necessity of our natural alienation. He then hopes to show how it is used and repeated in surprising places throughout Hegel’s work, including thePhenomenology, theLogic, and thePhilosophy of History. A visiting tutor at St. John’s College since spring 2012, Raoni Padui received a bachelor of arts degree from Vassar College in 2003 and a master of arts degree and doctorate in philosophy from Villanova University in 2005 and 2012, respectively. Before coming to St. John’s, Raoni Padui was an adjunct instructor at Villanova and on the part-time faculty of the University of New Mexico.

Why is Time a One Way Street? Anyone can see that the past is different from the future. Anyone, that is, but theoretical physicists, whose equations do not seem to distinguish the past from the future. How then do we physicists understand the "arrow of time": the fact that the past and future are so different? I will discuss the paradox of times arrow, and how physicists and cosmologists view it today.
Leonard Susskind is the Felix Bloch Professor of Theoretical Physics at Stanford University and director of the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Physics

Todd & The Fox: Indie. Dusty, dance-oriented music, written by Todd Lovato on five-string banjo, and featuring the drumming of talented multi-instrumentalist Erik Sawyer. In the tradition of rustic American folk and blues, Todd and the Fox takes a minimalist approach to performance: banjo, drums, bass foot pedals and voice. An “electro-roots” hybrid between modern acts like The Black Keys and The White Stripes. 2013 New Mexico Music Awards nominee for “Best Album of the Year.”
John Courage & The Great Plains: Indie. Their “Don't Fail Me Now" release received an honorable mention in SantaFe.com’s “Best Santa Fe Albums of 2012.” The songs on the album are reminiscent of something similar to Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers while maintaining their own vibe with original songs and music. Their upcoming album, GEMS, is due to be released in June of 2013. Just in time!
