SANTA FE BANDSTAND: Matthew Andrae
Thu, Jul 30 onetime 6:30 PM - 7:15 PM
Location: Santa Fe Plaza

Matthew Andrae's Brazilian/Flamenco/classical sound was enhanced at Berklee College of Music, University of Arizona and a brief stint at New England Conservatory. Matthew's playing is notable because of his ability to play bass lines, rhythm guitar and percussive accents all at the same time. In the spirit of Michael Hedges and Jose Feliciano, Matthew is uncommonly formidable on the guitar. It is a routine occurrence for several people in the audience to come up after Matthew's show and ask where the drum machine/backing tracks were hiding. In Matthew's case, it's all natural rhythm and playing ability. With a velvet voice and fierce guitar chops, it wasn't long before Matthew's music had been featured on C.B.S., N.P.R. and The Sci-Fi Channel.

This was an excellent beginning for a singer who is originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico, but there were bigger things on the horizon. When Matthew posted a song (“Sweet Celine”) that he wrote for his newborn daughter on YouTube, it garnered over five hundred thousand views in the first five days. Offers for recording deals soon followed. Matthew signed a publishing deal with Editions Raoul Breton (co-owned by CNN/Time On Line's Entertainer of the Century: Charles Aznavour) in Paris. This alliance has made Matthew a growing star in Europe with performances in Paris, Cannes and Switzerland, and in legendary venues such as the Theater Du Chatelet. Matthew's claim to fame was set in stone when he auditioned and won a chance to perform a duet with British pop star and Grammy Award winner Imogen Heap. “Imogen is my musical hero, and the fact that I get to sing with her on stage is a dream come true… more than that, really.” said Matthew of his good fortune. Currently, Matthew is working on a follow-up album to “BORN”, putting the finishing touches on a degree (majoring in "this and that") at Harvard University and preparing for his international tour slated for 2014. “He's one of those rare people who can combine instrumental talent, instrumental innovation, and vocal talent with great songwriting, both musically and lyrically... And he can fuse them all together in a single powerful message...one that is aware of our times and of its social issues.” - Steve Rodby- Bass, The Pat Metheny Group “Andrae reaches for the ineffable bittersweet cornucopia of experience that life presents." - Stephen Powell - Santa Fe New Mexican visit our website
SANTA FE BANDSTAND: Big Sam's Funky Nation
Thu, Jul 30 onetime 7:30 PM - 9 PM
Location: Santa Fe Plaza

Big Sam's Funky Nation is a driving force of urban funk. Ryan White, of the Oregonian, says the band is “tight enough (and hot enough) to turn coal into a diamondǃ” The band is led by trombone powerhouse, Big Sam Williams, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.” Big Sam refuses to let the audience sit still. Between the band's solos, Big Sam's signature dance moves and his distinctive trombone riffs, the energy level is high voltage when this band takes the stageǃ The Funky Nation is a stellar group of world-class musicians who meet the challenges of their funky band leader. BSFN's signature Noladelic Powerfunk sound masterfully combines a rock sensibility with improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that's the hallmark of big band funk.Big Sam began playing with the Dirty Dozen at the tender age of 19 before striking out on his own and creating the Funky Nation. Big Sam powered-up the horn section on the critically acclaimed, Grammy nominated, “River in Reverse” and is prominently featured in "Hot as a Pistol, Keen as a Blade" the concert tour DVD. While touring with Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint, in the Fall of 2006 and Summer of 2007, he earned consistent reviews as a musical force and star soloist. Big Sam has played with Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Dave Matthews, Ozomatli, and Widespread Panic. He has also shared the stage with U2 and Green Day for the emotional and energetic re-opening of the Superdome which was broadcast live on Monday Night Football.BSFN is a festival favorite across North America and their contagious tunes and memorable live performances have attracted fans far and wide, ranging from France, to the United Kingdom, to Greece, to Brazil, to Canada. BSFN is a favorite on the festival circuit and has sealed its mark on the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage, Gathering of the Vibes, Telluride Blues & Brews, Doheny Blues Festival, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo Arts & Music Festival, Wakarusa, Voodoo Music Experience, Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival, LEAF & many more. "The man can blow some bone and incite a crowd. He doesn't allow anyone to kick back and observe. He demands interaction and loyalty to the groove. This is participatory – all calculated to leave you feeling good about yourself and physically drained. [...] This is what people with complicated days and short attention spans beg for." - JazzTimes.com, Bill King visit our website

SANTA FE BANDSTAND: Gleewood
Thu, Aug 6 onetime 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Location: Santa Fe Plaza

Gleewood. The acoustic rock songwriting style of Jhett Schiavone (Guitar & Vocals) meets western and folk tradition of New Mexican cowgirl, Callie Sioux (Bass and Vocals) to bring an unlikely, and at-once recognizable sound to the folk/rock scene.

In short, if in some alternate universe, Johnny Cash learned how to play guitar under a palm tree with Jack Johnson and started writing with an Irish Zoey Deschanel in the late 60's,… That might sound like Gleewood's latest release. Jhett's bass baritone vocals weld with Callie's high clear melodies to produce an enjoyable and unique sound.

Since November 22nd of 2013, their converse and cowboy boots have taken them to over 60 different venues and 200 shows deep into 5 different states. Uprooted and dedicated, Gleewood has emerged and held their ground with continued radio interviews including 5 stations internationally playing their original music. A dozen or more newspaper write- ups as well as a thriving social media presence.

In their first year alone they have opened for country legend John Michael Montgomery, played at the Sundance Film Festival and opened for the Voice's own Grace Askew.

Their album (hard copies in ten different stores and almost sold out) features fellow, native New Mexican, Myles Erdman (drums and percussion), and Corinna Ripple (Fiddle) from the Flying “J” Wranglers.

Their original material is evoked with instrumental ingenuity and lyrics, reflecting day-today dilemmas uplifted with their Christian faith, and made emotionally tangible with a raw, organic feel. Gleewood will be releasing a new CD with DVD project featuring the same talent, new songs and more energy in Spring 2015. visit our website
