Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars
Location: Santa Fe Brewing Pub & Grill (505) 424-9637
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are a group of musicians who escaped the horrific violence of Sierra Leone's civil war, landed in a West African refugee camp, and formed a band with humble beginnings that has grown to be an international musical sensation. An unbelievable testament to the human spirit, the journey of Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars exemplifies the universal healing power of music.
Near the turn of the 21st Century, when Sierra Leone's war-ravaged capital was burning, thousands fled to neighboring countries. Among them were Reuben Koroma and Francis Lamgba (Franco) who began making music for fellow refugees in a camp in Guinea. The developing band was able to acquire a rusted-out sound system and beat up electric guitars as they moved from camp to camp playing their uplifting, can't-help-but-dance live shows, which included Black Nature, a teenage orphan with a gift for rap, as well as Abdulrahim Kamara (Arahim) and Mohamed Bangura (Medo), both of whom had had limbs amputated by the rebels. Recognizing the extremely high quality of musicianship, the United Nations was instrumental in financing the band's first studio recordings. The rest, as they say, is history.
Please join us for an uplifting evening of dance music by one of the greatest outfits ever to emerge from West Africa.

Champagne with Friends
Location: Cowgirl 319 S. Guadalupe St, Santa Fe, NM 87501 505.982.2565Event Type: Music/Nightlife
Description: Born in the middle of mosquito country on the “Right Side of Texas” or Beaumont as they call it, Thomas Champagne grew up with the best of both worlds, Texas Pride and a Cajun Spirit. Hitting the stage by the age of 14, Thomas' musical roots were formed on piano, bass, and drums. While attending Texas A&M University in the mid 90′s, Thomas formed a funk-rock quartet known as 4D2 and began playing throughout the state as the bassist and vocalist. Around the turn of the century, Thomas moved back to his hometown and starting performing bass with the Folsom Creek, a rock/bluegrass mix. After a great run of shows and a new album just a week from hitting the shelf, the group folded and out of disappointment and self realization, Thomas discovered his true songwriting style. For the first time ever, Thomas took the stage as a front man forming the band, Audioflava, a jazz/funk/pop entity that evolved into an electric power trio featuring Danny Anderson on guitar and Carlos Lopez on drums. Audioflava and Thomas moved to Austin, TX where he started working at Arlyn and Pedernales Studios. After a few years in Austin, Danny and Thomas decided it was time to hit the road and began touring the states as a duo, Champagne Anderson. With such a great success on the road as a duo, Thomas and Danny headed to the studio in the Fall of 2007 to complete their long awaited album, “Old Town”, and hence formed the group, “Champagne with Friends”. Within the past four years “Champagne with Friends” has performed on over 130 stages amongst 15 different states, and the train keeps on moving. In the Spring of 2011, Thomas was invited to “The Swamp Sessions” in Awendaw, SC where he then connected with Mark Bryan and Danielle Howle who agreed to produce his next project. By late Summer, Thomas moved to Charleston, to complete his second album and begin touring the East Coast as the solo artist, “T Champagne” and when joined by other talent, “Champagne with Friends”. Thomas is currently sponsored by The Music Initiative Magazine as their Emerging Artist for 2012.

They Wove for Horses: DinéSaddle Blankets
Location: Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Museum Hill (505) 476-1250Event Type: Art
The saddle blankets on exhibit date from 1860 to 2002 and are arranged by weaving methods: tapestry weave; two-faced double weave; and twill weaves of diagonal, diamond, and herringbone patterns. By using a variety of warp and weft yarns—natural wool, cotton, angora mohair, unraveled bayeta, and Germantown—weavers added individuality to the everyday and fanciful tapestries they created for horses.
Horse trappings on exhibit reveal the great pride that Diné horsemen took in their horses and how they adorned them for ceremonial and social events. The Diné first learned how to manufacture saddles and bridles from neighboring cultures and their proficiency quickly surpassed that of their mentors. That devotion resonates still, as the horse remains a viable living force in Diné life today.

It's About Time: 14,000 Years of Art in New Mexico
Location: New Mexico Museum of Art 107 West Palace Avenue (505) 476-5072Event Type: Art,Historical,Museums
New Mexicans have always made art—we have always made aestheticized objects that reflect our world views. From beautifully made, 14,000-year-old Paleo-Indian tools to contemporary imagery, New Mexico art has reflected our changing technologies, embodied our ways of making a living, and personified our spirituality.
And where else but New Mexico has art reflected everything from the creators of stone tools to the invention of the atomic bomb?
Curated by Joseph Traugott, Ph.D., the museum's curator of twentieth century art, the exhibition begins with the earliest yet-discovered art—Clovis points—and proceeds in an unbroken continuum to the present.
It's About Time: 14,000 Years of Art in New Mexico displays 120 works of art that include Native American, Hispanic American, and European American works as a single, holistic tradition, not three separate traditions that never interact. Most of the objects in the exhibition were made to be art, others became art by metamorphosis when objects were understood in new cultural contexts. The works range from representational images to abstractions like Raymond Jonson's paintings N and M (illustrated above), an obvious reference to New Mexico. The two paintings are part of his series of 26 works based on the letters of the alphabet.
As markers of the past and present, the works of art in It's About Time spur aesthetic responses and a deeper understanding of the region's diverse cultures—how the art of the early santeros evolved from the more baroque originally imported from Mexico to a more simplified expression to accommodate indigenous art-making materials and beliefs. Yet, innovation by Native artists was discouraged by early anthropologists who placed a premium on the artistic styles of the past which they considered to be more “authentic” and culturally pure; fortunately Maria and Julian Martinez did not hear this message influencing generations of artists who followed.
Information: 505-476-5072 or visit www.nmartmuseum.org
Days/Times: Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Open Free on Fridays, 5:00-8:00 p.m. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day the Museum is open 7 days a week, including Mondays.

Nancy Holt: Sightlines Exhibition
Location: Santa Fe Art Institute on the campus of the Santa Fe University of Art and Design (505) 424 5050Event Type: Art
The exhibition is open MONDAY - FRIDAY only.
The Santa Fe Art Institute is proud to present Nancy Holt: Sightlines, an in-depth examination of Holt's early projects from 1966 to 1980, on view from May 5 through June 29. Holt's pioneering work falls at the intersection of art, architecture, and time-based media. The career of this important American artist took off in the late 1960s when she and other like-minded artists in the U.S. turned away from the emerging commercial gallery system to embrace the American landscape and its geological diversity. Located beyond the confines of New York gallery walls, Holt began working on large-scale outdoor projects that responded to the environment and offered novel means for observing natural phenomena.

"New Deal Art: CCC Furniture and Tinwork"
Location: Museum of Spanish Colonial Art 750 Camino Lejo On Museum Hill Santa Fe, New Mexico 87505 505-982.2226
EXHIBIT On View Through September 30th, 2012
The Museum of Spanish Colonial Art and Bandelier National Monument present an exhibit showcasing the work of CCC-trained craftsmen, including furniture, furnishings, and decorative tin. From 1933-1940, CCC workers at Bandelier National Monument built and furnished 31 buildings. The furniture and tinwork created for these buildings illustrate an extraordinary combination of traditional and early 20th century design and demonstrate the expertise of the craftsmen. Some 24 pieces of furniture and 15 pieces of decorative tin are exhibited along with photos of CCC woodworkers, measured drawings of the pieces, and the names of many of those who were enrollees at the Bandelier camp.
In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed Emergency Conservation Work legislation to put the many unemployed of the country to work. Thousands of New Mexicans, destitute from the Depression and a historically cash-poor economy, were able to take advantage of this program, later known as the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), owing to New Mexico's recent Statehood. Not only was the training given the many young men in CCC camps life-altering, but the Federal government helped to validate the traditional arts by incorporating them into its programs. These Federal programs served to sustain and revitalize the traditional arts of Hispano New Mexico, and their legacy is still apparent today.
The “New Deal Art: CCC Furniture and Tinwork” exhibit has been designated a We the People project by the New Mexico Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Programs for the exhibition, including tours, a lecture series and symposium, are funded in part by a grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council.
PLEASE NOTE THE MUSEUM OF SPANISH COLONIAL ART IS CLOSED MONDAYS FROM LABOR DAY TO MEMORIAL DAY.

Jeff Clements and Free Speech for People present "Corporations Are Not People"
Location: Collected Works Bookstore 202 Galisteo Street (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226Event Type: Lectures/Readings
Collected Works Bookstore features Jeff Clements, the co-founder of Free Speech for People, for a reading from his book, Corporations Are Not People: Why They Have More Rights Than You Do and What You Can Do About It.
Corporations Are Not People is a definitive guide to overturning the 2010 Supreme Court decision Citizens United v. FEC. It tells the true story of how some of the largest corporations in the world organized to take over the American government and Constitution, how devastating this corporate campaign has been to America and Americans, and how the American people can reclaim freedom and democracy.
Jeff Clements is the co-founder of Free Speech for People, a national, non-partisan campaign to challenge the creation of Constitutional rights for corporations, overturn Citizens United v. FEC, and strengthen American democracy and republican self-government. Clements has served as Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts from 1996 to 2000; Assistant Attorney General and Chief of the Public Protection & Advocacy Journal in the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office from 2007 to 2009; and was a partner in the Boston law firms of Mintz Levin and Clements & Clements, which he founded in 2003. He graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University Law School in 1988.
Jeff Clements will be in conversation with author, playwright, mediator, and essayist Craig Barnes, host of the radio show "Our Times With Craig Barnes."

The $64,000 Question
METROPOLITAN OPERA SCENERY DISPLAY
Two huge painted scenic backdrops from the old Metropolitan Opera house in New York, bought in the 1950's with money won on "The $64,000 Question" TV show by an opera enthusiast from Long Island, New York, will be on display, Wednesday evenings at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe in the railyard, May 9th to June 6th. The story of the scenery, painted by famed Met designer Joseph Urban, will be presented in a talk given by Webster Young, a composer, music journalist, and New York opera director. Young was invited twice by the White House to be a candidate for director of the National Endowment for the Arts. He will talk, play his concert grand piano, and host a Q&A with the audience.
The scenic backdrops by Urban date from 1928 and 1935, and are 50 x 24 feet. They will take up the entire width of one of the museum's large rooms. Many of the Met's great singers sang in front of this scenery.
This event also celebrates a book release by Webster Young: "Berkeley-Paris Express - The Education of a Composer, 1968-80". Copies of the book will be available for signing. Young is composer of 10 ballets and 6 operas and studied with followers of Stravinsky and Milhaud.

Collected Works Bookstore is pleased to offer a 45-minute Story Time session every Wednesday and Thursday at 10.45am!

As attention spans vary, families are welcome to come and go as they wish--- we are delighted to host the group to its saturation point! Occasionally, we break into song if the children need movement or a change of pace. We also encourage dialogue as the stories are read and the audience's curiousity is piqued.
All children must be accompanied and upervised by an adult throughout the Story Time. Please come enjoy our gatherings and follow up with a visit to our cafe; nothing goes ith Story Time like a good snack!

Blame it on Rebekkah
Location: Cowgirl 319 S. Guadalupe St, Santa Fe, NM 87501 505.982.2565Event Type: Music/Nightlife
Description: With grooves like Love is a Stolen Bowling Ball and Dim Sum in Albuquerque, BLAME IT ON REBEKKAH explores the musical territory of “dance-pop.” Loaded with heavy doses of hip-hop synthesizers and percussion loops, their sound marries the power ballad and the beat, perky pop and funky groove, lusty rhythm and bubbly melodies. Live performances are a musical, emotional roller-coaster. At moments, the show has an intimate, piano-lounge feel, packed with stories&crowd interaction as Rebekkah performs solo, bare and exposed with just her piano and voice. Other times it feels more like a 70's disco or modern day doo-wop concert with Rebekkah surrounded by talented musicians and backed by swinging vocalists that get the crowd moving. Always a good time had. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWjlO6rQiNk&feature=youtu.be&hd=1

BrownChicken BrownCow with Three String Bale
Location: Sol @ Santa Fe Brewing Company (505) 424-9637
BrownChicken BrownCow StringBand will stop at Sol at Santa Fe Brewing for a 21+ show on Thursday, May 24, 2012. Three String Bale provides opening support. Further information is available at www.solofsantafe.com.
Based out of West Virginia, BrownChicken BrownCow StringBand formed in 2008 and began performing locally, playing together nearly every night after work and recording at the home studio of founding member Justin Morris (vocals, guitar, bass, banjo). Soon, brothers Xander (vocals, fiddle, tenor banjo, guitar, kazoo) and Orion Hitzig (vocals, mandolin, fiddle, banjo) relocated to Maui, Hawaii to travel and explore, and began playing together on the sidewalks of Paia. Once Justin had finished mixing their debut album, he reunited with them in Hawaii, where they ultimately stayed for 9 months. On Maui, they also met Steve Sargenti, who has become a closer friend and positive influence, and who's since recorded the band's last two records. Last year, founding member Matt Del Olmo (vocals, bass, guitar, banjo) rejoined the band, along with new harmonica player and singer Katherine Fountain. All told, the band has done 15 cross-country US tours in their time, and still return to Hawaii annually.
With their original Appalachian string band sound, BrownChicken BrownCow StringBand is a quintette eager to create melodious poly-rhythms for fans far and wide, traveling and performing as a way of life to spread their unique sound. The band's first album, Fruit Goggles was comprised of early recordings from their start in West Virginia, quickly sold out of its 500 copy run on the streets of Hawaii, where their performances were often stopped by law enforcement because the crowds grew large enough to block traffic. When they returned to the mainland, instead of settling back down, they began touring constantly, picking up diehard fans in every city along the way. In the two years following their debut record, they also released two more full-lengths, entitled Gallup On You and It's A Deep Subject. BrownChicken BrownCow StringBand is currently touring on their fourth release, Live from Pa'ia Tattoo Parlor.
