Summer 2007

Summer 2007

Perfect sunny days, cool evenings, and a lively yet relaxed atmosphere make summer the right time to be in Santa Fe. As the city moves closer to its 400th Anniversary Commemoration in 2010, each summer seems to have more in store than the last.

This summer is especially busy with the return of two popular biennial events; the international art fair, Art Santa Fe, and the photographic extravaganza, PhotoArts Santa Fe. These join annual favorites like Spanish Market, Indian Market, Rodeo de Santa Fe, The Santa Fe Opera, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show, Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, the Thirsty Ear Festival and many more to make summer 2007 an extraordinary time.

While visual and performing arts are always on display in Santa Fe, there is so much more to do during a day. Try a white water raft trip, take a train ride, explore the city's remarkable past, play a round of golf, indulge at a spa, have a romantic dinner, or just relax under the bluest of skies. Whatever it takes, Santa Fe has a way to excite or soothe.

Here are some of this summer's highlights:

The Santa Fe Opera celebrates its 51st anniversary June 29-August 25, 2007 with a major American premiere, new productions of works by Puccini, Rameau, and Richard Strauss, plus the revival of one of the company's most successful recent Mozart productions. Puccini's La bohém opens the season in June followed by Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. A new production of Strauss's Daphne opens in July and Tan Dun's Tea: A Mirror of Soul receives its American premiere, also in July. A new staging of Rameau's Platée rounds out an exceptional season. Once every two years Santa Fe plays host to one of the country's fastest rising stars on the international art fair circuit. For 2007, ART Santa Fe's seventh biennial art fair will be held July 12-15, at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe in the city's burgeoning Railyard district. The fair will feature a lineup of exhibitors that includes top Asian galleries, a strong contingent of Europeans, an exciting array of work by Latin American artists, and outstanding galleries from New York and elsewhere in the U.S. In addition, the event's keynote presenter Thomas Krens, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation since 1988, will be joined by special guest, internationally acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, for a discussion of the Guggenheim Bilbao and their monumental new project in Abu Dhabi. ART Santa Fe is a juried fair and the carefully selected collection of contemporary and modern art comes from acknowledged masters to artists of the cutting edge. The fair has been designed for an audience of collectors, museum groups, art professionals, and art lovers with more than 55 galleries representing hundreds of artists scheduled to take part. ART Santa Fe is large enough to be interesting yet small enough to be intimate and has been praised for its accessible format that allows an up close, unhurried viewing experience. www.artsantafe.com.

Santa Fe has grown into one of the most important cities in the country for photographers: as a showplace for their work, as a home, and as a place filled with pictures waiting to be taken. Santa Fe's beautiful natural setting along the Rocky Mountains, its historic architecture, multiple cultures, and diverse traditions are just the first of endless choices for subject material while the area's legendary clear light has attracted artists of every kind to the area for decades. In addition, as the second largest art market in the country, Santa Fe's galleries are filled with extraordinary photography, both historic and contemporary, while the city's business community supports a growing number of photographic services for visitors and professionals alike. It is against this background of creative and commercial support that PhotoArts Santa Fe's biennial festival, July 13-22, 2007, will again offer everything for the amateur and professional photographer and for those simply interested in the photographic arts. PhotoArts Santa Fe is a 10 day celebration featuring city-wide photo exhibits, a show and sale of fine art photography, equipment demonstrations, lectures, workshops, portfolio reviews, studio tours, gallery exhibitions, a huge photographic trade show, and guided photo shoots among many other events. www.photoartssantafe.com/

In just three years the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market has become the largest international folk art market in the country and one of Santa Fe's most popular summer events. This summer the fourth annual market will be held on July 14 & 15, 2007. The setting is picturesque Milner Plaza on Museum Hill, the atmosphere is that of an international bazaar, and the art selection is boggling. Embroidery from Afghanistan, weaving from Bhutan, jewelry from Mali, and pottery from Peru is just a sampling of the art from the more than 60 participating artists. Beyond a dazzling selection of the world's folk art there will be international foods, entertainment, and children's events. The Market was established to both celebrate and develop the international folk art marketplace and is continually evolving to meet the needs of international folk artists and buyers. The Market has received praise from UNESCO (the United Nation's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and other international organizations for its success in supporting cultural preservation and offering artists economic sustainability through the sale of their work. In fact, the Folk Art Market led to Santa Fe being designated a UNESCO Creative City in 2005; the first city in the U.S. so honored. As New Mexico First Lady Barbara Richardson explains, "This unique celebration of creativity and humanity emphasizes New Mexico's proud history of multiculturalism while promoting international cooperation and understanding through art and culture." www.folkartmarket.org.

maria_benitez

Spanish Market in Santa Fe is one of the city's most intriguing and festive weekends, highlighted by the largest juried show and sale of traditional Spanish Colonial art in the U.S. Featuring the work of more than 250 traditional artists, a show by contemporary Hispanic artists, regional foods, and continuous music and dance performances on and around the Santa Fe Plaza, Spanish Market is one of the most important, and fun, art events in the city. The 56th annual celebration of the rich Hispanic culture of northern New Mexico will be held July 28 & 29, 2007, outside on the Santa Fe Plaza. Free admission.

Indian Market is Santa Fe's biggest single event and the largest show and sale of Native American art and craft in the world. There is no other gathering of Native American artists that offers the breadth of variety and depth of quality as this weekend in Santa Fe. This year marks the 86th annual Indian Market and will feature the work of 1,200 artists from close to 100 tribes from across North America. In addition to the actual market there are auctions, art shows, special gallery exhibits, artists receptions, musical events, and festivities all over town leading up to the weekend show. For seasoned collectors and first timers alike, Indian Market is a remarkable look at new and old art forms and one of Santa Fe's most memorable events. Held on the Santa Fe Plaza, August 18 & 19, 2007. Free admission. www.swaia.org.

The Thirsty Ear Festival is New Mexico's premier roots music festival, featuring world-renowned blues, folk, Cajun, zydeco, roots, rock, bluegrass, and alt-country performers on three stages for a romp through America's musical legacy. This summer's festival, August 31 through September 2, will again be held at the Eaves Movie Ranch, a western movie set that's proved a perfect location for this high-spirited weekend. Demonstrations, kids' activities, local crafts, food, microbrews & fine wine round out the fun. www.thirstyearfestival.com.

Fiesta de Santa Fe is the oldest community event in the U.S. Continually celebrated since 1692, This summer's Fiesta will be September 1st through the 9th. Arts and Crafts shows, Mariachi concerts, the burning of Zozobra, music and food on the Plaza, the ever-popular Children's Pet Parade, and other Fiesta ceremonies mark this celebration of the peaceful reoccupation of Santa Fe by Don Diego De Vargas. A week of revelry, music and companionship for the city and all who are here, this year's festivities herald Santa Fe's 400th Anniversary Commemoration beginning in 2008. www.santafefiesta.org/.

The festival atmosphere during Santa Fe's performing arts season and the great food, endless shopping, art, history, and scenic beauty mean any trip is too short to take everything in. Santa Fe is a close and convenient drive for many travelers in need of a summer escape and, for those flying, the city is a one hour shuttle ride or rental car trip from the Albuquerque airport. There is lodging for every budget, food for every taste, and something for every interest.
