For chocolate lovers, there's no better way to see Santa Fe than through the tantalizing tastes of artisanal chocolates, made by gifted hands that bring out the very best flavors using an array of sweet treats and organic ingredients native to New Mexico, including chile, pinon nuts and lavender.

chocolate milagro silver If you're downtown in the Santa Fe Plaza area, visit Todos Santos, located at 125 East Palace Avenue in Sena Plaza. This tiny shop filled with chocolates galore will make you swoon with delight. Famous for its chocolate milagros, or religious emblems gilded with 24 karat gold, Todos Santos also offers dark chocolate truffles, hand painted chocolates, whimsical "After Dinner Saints," and other delicious sweets.

Head on over to the historic La Fonda hotel at 100 East San Francisco St., where you'll find the famous Senor Murphy Chocolate shop. This Santa Fe candymaker has been serving the finest handmade chocolates for more than 30 years. These specialty chocolates, fudge and confections are made with native New Mexico ingredients, including pinon nuts and red and green chile. Put together your own sampler box, filled with assorted creams, pinon brittles, organic dark chocolate truffles and pinon toffee.

Next, enjoy a steaming mug of rich hot chocolate from the Kakawa Chocolate House, which specializes in hand-crafted historic European and Meso-American Aztec drinking chocolate. Located at 1050 East Paseo de Peralta, this specialty chocolate maker also offers chocolate truffles in exotic flavors, dark molded chocolate and memorable hot chocolate elixirs that will warm your spirit. Actress Julia Roberts was recently spotted shopping here.

Over at The Chocolate Smith, at 851A Cerrillos Rd., the chocolate makers have come up with some true treasures, unlike anything you've tasted before. Here, the Green Chile Pistachio Bark, Petit Pates, White Chocolate Lemon Lavender Bark and Dipped Caramels with Sea Salt are wildly popular and make great gifts to ship home to friends and family. But don't forget to take some with you so you can savor their flavors during the rest of your Santa Fe visit.
