LENSIC PRESENTS ARLO GUTHRIE
Tue, Mar 31 onetime 7 PM - 8:30 PM
Location: The Lensic

Lensic Presents Arlo Guthrie: Alice's Restaurant 50th anniversary tour.

Folk music icon Arlo Guthrie returns to The Lensic, this time to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the story behind his classic song, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree."

Fifty years ago on Thanksgiving day, Guthrie visited friend Alice Brock and her husband at their home, a church in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He did them a favor by taking out their garbage. The dump was closed that day, so Guthrie and a friend dropped the garbage off a cliff where other locals had previously dropped trash. Guthrie was arrested the following day, and the mark on his record miraculously kept him out of Vietnam by making him ineligible for the draft.

Guthrie recalled the incident in hilarious detail in 1967's 18-minute musical monologue, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree," which became his most beloved song. The song also became the subject of a 1969 movie and is also a Thanksgiving tradition, played nationwide on public radio every year.

Guthrie last played at The Lensic in 2013 for his "Here Comes the Kid" tour, which honored his father, the legendary Woody Guthrie, in what would have been Woody's 100th birthday year.

Throughout his career, Arlo Guthrie has honored his father in song as well as in life, practicing social and political activism and connecting with audiences as a storyteller, philosopher, and musician. He is known for performing his own original music as well as songs his father made famous. visit our website
