Spring 2009 in Santa Fe

New Santa Fe Area Comes to Life this Spring

Spring in Santa Fe promises to be green and lush after good snowfall over the winter. Following the first flush of annual color will come the blooming of the Santa Fe Railyard, www.sfrailyardcc.org, an exciting development adjacent to the Santa Fe Southern rail line in the Guadalupe Street area.

The Guadalupe Historic District has been anchored for years by the refurbished railroad warehouses of the Sanbusco Market Center, Santuario de Guadalupe, the city's most contemporary museum SITE Santa Fe - and its new exhibition "Pretty is as Pretty Does that just opened - and the many shops, galleries, and restaurants along and just off of Guadalupe. With the opening of the Santa Fe Railyard in the fall of '08 and its completion over the winter, this spring will begin a whole new chapter in this already lively part of the city.

Highlights of the Railyard include 13 acres of open space including a performance area, plaza, and pedestrian promenade, live-work studio space, a new retail complex, and a permanent home for the popular Santa Fe Farmers Market, www.santafefarmersmarket.com, one of the country's most recognized markets. The project is a green development with water-wise landscaping and multiple water catchments for storing precipitation and has attracted new restaurants, galleries, and stores into the Railyard area.

In addition, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, www.nmrailrunner.com, train departs multiple times a day from the old Santa Fe train station, located in the Railyard, serving Albuquerque, and towns farther south. The train connects Santa Fe with Sandoval County locations, various stops in Albuquerque including near the Albuquerque Airport, and the towns of Los Lunas and Belen. This is the first train service of its kind into Santa Fe and has proven to be useful and popular since it began running in late 2008.

Among other new developments in Santa Fe are the state-of-the-art Santa Fe Community Convention Center downtown that opened last summer and the opening of the New Mexico History Museum at the Palace of the Governors on Memorial Day Weekend, 2009.
