ART Santa Fe 2007
Seventh Biennial Contemporary Art Fair a Summer Highlight

Once every two years Santa Fe plays host to one of the country's fastest rising stars on the international art fair circuit. For 2007, ART Santa Fe's seventh biennial art fair will be held July 12-15, at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe in the city's burgeoning Railyard district. The fair will feature a lineup of exhibitors that includes top Asian galleries, a strong contingent of Europeans, an exciting array of work by Latin American artists, and outstanding galleries from New York and elsewhere in the U.S. In addition, the event's keynote presenter Thomas Krens, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation since 1988, will be joined by special guest, internationally acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, for a discussion of the Guggenheim Bilbao and their monumental new project in Abu Dhabi.

ART Santa Fe is a juried fair and the carefully selected collection of contemporary and modern art comes from acknowledged masters to artists of the cutting edge. The fair has been designed for an audience of collectors, museum groups, art professionals, and art lovers with more than 55 galleries representing hundreds of artists scheduled to take part. ART Santa Fe is large enough to be interesting yet small enough to be intimate and has been praised for its accessible format that allows an up close, unhurried viewing experience.

Set in one of America's most important art cities, the ART Santa Fe weekend will surely be one of the summer's highlights. The fair will add even more glamour and sophistication to an already stellar festival of Santa Fe events. Performances at The Santa Fe Opera and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, exhibitions at the city's many museums such as SITE Santa Fe, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of International Folk Art, as well as shows at the city's hundreds of galleries will take place during Art Santa Fe.

Events surrounding ART Santa this summer include:

  • The Vernissage, an opening gala preview and champagne buffet at El Museo, Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00, benefiting El Museo.
  • Thomas Krens, with very special guest Frank Gehry, presents the keynote lecture for this season's ART Santa Fe Presents event at the Lensic Performing Arts Center on Saturday, July 14, at 7:00 p.m. Krens will speak on the timely topic of the intersections of art, architecture, and culture in his lecture, The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao: Frank Gehry Designs a Masterpiece. Both will discuss Mr. Gehry's newly announced project in Aub Dahbi
  • 26 Hours will take place during the fair in a double project space featuring 26 solo installations rotating on an hourly basis, one for each hour the fair is open.
  • A Salon Event, in collaboration with the 26 Hours exhibition, will be hosted at the nearby Hideaway Lounge from 5PM to late evening each night of the fair with numerous exhibitions by 26 Hours artists.

A sculptural Façade Competition to select an installation for the east side of El Museo was held as part of Art Santa Fe. The open competition was expected to draw a dozen or so local entries. Instead, over 100 designs from all over the world were received, turning the competition into an event unto itself. The winning entry, "Shifting Lines," was designed by 3 graduate architecture students from Washington University in St. Louis. The white, semi-translucent fabric strip façade will be installed at El Museo in time for a 4:30 PM, July 12 unveiling along with the ribbon cutting opening the fair. All 100+ façade entries will be displayed during the fair.

The Press is invited to cover any and all events. Gallerists and attending artists will be on hand for interviews as available. Images are obtainable upon request. Contact Rebecca Fitzgerald: 505-988-8883, press@artsantafe.com .
