Santa Fe #3 U.S. Travel Destination
10/2009: The sophisticated travelers who subscribe to CONDE NAST TRAVELER magazine have voted Santa Fe one of their favorite travel destinations in the U.S. Santa Fe was selected as the third most popular travel city in the country after San Francisco and Charleston, SC and ahead of New York, at #4, and a host of desirable travel towns in the magazine's 22nd Annual Readers' Choice Awards. In 2008 Santa Fe was ranked in the fourth spot.
The awards were presented on Wednesday evening (10/14) in New York during a dinner and ceremony at the IAC Building. Winners were announced in a variety of categories after tens of thousands of readers of the publication voted for their favorite travel cities, islands, hotels, resorts, airlines, cruise lines, and other travel-service providers and destinations from around the world.
"Everyone in Santa Fe plays a role in delivering on Santa Fe's promise of a rewarding visit," Santa Fe Mayor David Coss said. "There is no way the city could continually appear at the top of this list without Santa Fe's retailers, lodgers, restaurants, artists, musicians, performers, attractions, service businesses, and citizens all providing a quality experience."
Santa Fe Convention & Visitor Bureau Executive Director Keith Toler said, "It is a testament to Santa Fe's enduring allure and a reminder of just how remarkable a place it is that we are included in this year's poll with some of the country's most appealing destinations."
"The big news is that, undaunted by tough times, our readers are still out there, discovering the coolest experiences and reaffirming an enduring passion for travel," said Conde Nast Traveler Editor in Chief Klara Glowczewska. "It's clear that our readers are as devoted to the worldwide diversity of travel as ever."
Santa Fe has been rated as one of the top U.S. travel destinations by the poll since 1992 when Santa Fe was just a write-in candidate but received enough votes from the magazine's readers to be chosen the number one travel destination in the world.
The top four US cities as ranked in the 22nd Annual Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards: #1. San Francisco; #2 Charleston, SC; #3. Santa Fe; #4. New York; The results of the poll will be featured in the magazine's November issue which goes on newsstands later in October and will also appear on the magazine's web site, www.cntraveller.com.
Every year since 1988, a select sample of Conde Nast Traveler readers have taken the Readers' Choice Survey. The final tabulation of responses were done by Mediamark Research, Inc. of New York City. Each candidate was rated, criterion by criterion, as excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor. Criterion scores, which represent the percentage of respondents rating a candidate excellent or very good, are averaged to determine the final score.
