Santa Fe Indian market Celebrates 90 Years
Largest show and sale of Native art coming up, August 20-21
The 90th Annual Santa Fe Indian Market is the preeminent Native arts market in the world, embracing the past, present, and future of Indian Arts. This year more than 1,100 artists from 100 tribes throughout North America will take part in the largest cultural event in New Mexico.
This year's events in Santa Fe begin August 9 at Collected Works Bookstore. Don James discusses "One Nation, One Year," his photographic essay documenting the people of the Navajo Nation. Tanya Winder reads her poems of life and art.
The opening of "New Native Photography 2011," takes place on August 12 at the New Mexico Museum of Art featuring the winners of a juried Native photography competition.
The 11th Annual Native Cinema Showcase takes place August 15-21 at the New Mexico History Museum. The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian and the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) collaborated to present this collection of work by Native filmmakers. All showings are free. On the 15th starting at 7:00 pm, screenings will feature the work of Classification X winners. The classification is the newest art classification at Indian markets; the moving images category.
On August 18 starting at 6:00, downtown will be filled with music as SWAIA Presents Music on the Plaza Bandstand with Clan/Destine (Native Soul Operation Peace) and Levi & the Plateros (Native high powered Rock and Blues). It is the final night of free music in the Santa Fe Music Bandstand Series.
The Santa Fe Indian Market show and sale takes place on and around the Santa Fe Plaza. Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21 from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Even with two days it is hard to see everything as artist's booths surround the Plaza and line the nearby streets. From the finest of traditional forms to the most contemporary of work, Indian Market is a showcase for Native arts of the highest caliber. The market is free.
Throughout the week leading up to the market Santa Fe is filled with events at galleries, hotels, and the city's businesses as the whole town gets involved in this highlight of summer. Look for details at www.swaia.org.
