American Eagle - Art Weekend, May, 2009

The daily American Eagle direct flight from Dallas to the Santa Fe Municipal Airport makes its first trip on June 11 and the timing couldn't be better for art lovers.

The prestigious Sculpture Objects and Functional Art Fairs (SOFA) of Chicago and New York opens its first annual Santa Fe edition on June 11, continuing through Sunday, June 14. SOFA events include the 4-day exposition, featuring an elite line up of 35 international dealers and the work of hundreds of artists, 3 lecture series by noted artists, curators, and collectors, plus a VIP program of exclusive private home tours, curator-led museum tours, and special events. (An Opening Night Preview and Reception takes place June 10 to benefit the New Mexico Museum of Art's inaugural Design Collection). www.sofaexpo.com

In addition, the New Mexico Museum of Art's most recent exhibition, American Impressionism; Paintings from the Phillips Collection, premiers on June 5. More than 65 Impressionist works (ca.1880-1920) from the renowned Phillips Collection will be on display in the downtown museum through September 13, 2009. Included will be works from celebrated American artists John Henry Twatchman, J. Alden Weir, Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson, and William Lathrop, among many others. The show features some of the Phillips Collection's most treasured paintings and is a serene complement to SOFA's bold and dimensional art. www.nmartmuseum.org

Plus, the newly created New Mexico History Museum will have opened on May 24 with an immersive, multi-media environment exploring New Mexico's complex and colorful stories. Set in a 96,000 square foot expansion to the country's oldest public building, the Palace of the Governors, the new museum complex is poised to redefine the state-of-the-art in history museums. www.nmhistorymuseum.org

Finally, the new air service will make getting to Santa Fe easier for all the city's other notable art events, such as the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market (July 11-12), Art Santa Fe International Art Fair (July 23-26), Spanish Market (July 25-26), and Santa Fe Indian Market (August 22-23).
