opening reception:KATHLEEN DOYLE COOK
Location: New Concept Gallery, 610 Canyon Road 505-795-7570They are created from the act of painting. The images evolve from color, texture and
energy produced by layers of media and brushwork. These rich surfaces invite an
exploration of the levels of awareness found in spaces between a "known image"
and its layers of possibilities. Although these are abstract images, Doyle Cook's
color palette, compositions and sensuous surfaces reflect an obvious reference to
northern New Mexico.
Doyle Cook moved to Santa Fe in 2010 from the Boston area, where she exhibited
at the MPG Gallery in Boston, the Jon Barrett Gray Fine Art Gallery in Manchester
and the Alper's Fine Art Gallery in Andover, MA, as well as at numerous juried
exhibits including the Cambridge Art Association. Her works are in various private
and corporate collections including William A. Berry&Son, Inc and the Verenium
Corporation in Massachusetts.

Indiana Jones Weekend!
Location: The Lensic Performing Arts Center 211 W. San Francisco Street, Santa Fe, NM 505 988 7050Event Type: Film,Theater/Dance
Two evenings of action and adventure (and snakes!) with the archeologist Indiana Jones is a perfect way to start off the summer for kids, families and those of us who want to beat the heat and the typical summer offerings at the multiplex. Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by George Lucas, Raiders of the Lost Ark was conceived on the heels of the successes of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Spielberg) and Star Wars (Lucas). A critical and popular success, the movie was the top grossing film of the year. It also made Harrison Ford, already a cultural hero due to his role as Hans Solo in Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, a huge star.
Raiders of the Lost Ark introduces us to the archeologist, Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones Jr. PhD, who is assigned by the U.S. government to locate the lost Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis do. The year is 1936. With the help of an old flame, Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), Indy discovers the Ark in Egypt put is pursued by the Nazis, led by his nemesis, Dr. René Belloq. Kidnapping by the bad guys, close encounters with snakes and lots of hand to hand combat ensues.
Set in 1935, the darker Temple of Doom (1984) was created as a prequel to Raiders. After escaping Chinese gangsters with the help of a singer and actress Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw), Indy stumbles upon an Indian village under the power of a cult leader, Mola Ram (Amrish Puri). It’s up to Indy, Willie and their twelve-year-old sidekick, Short Round, to rescue the village children kidnapped by the evil cult leader. In the mix are the holy Sankara Stones, desired by all for their power.
The Big Screen Classics series is part of Lensic Presents, a program of the Lensic Performing Arts Center created to bring diverse and affordable programming to Santa Fe. Big Screen Classics are sponsored by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.
Event Details: Lensic Presents, Big Screen Classics: Raiders of the Lost Ark, June 1 and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, June 2. Both movies are at 7 pm. The movies are shown on DVD. Run times: Raiders of the Lost Ark, 115 minutes; Temple of Doom, 118 minutes.

3rd Annual Eldorado Area Gardening Tour
Location: To get to La Tienda center, from I-25 take the Highway 285 South/Cline's Corners exit. Turn right at the second stoplight, onto Avenida Vista Grande. Or just follow the signs from I-25What sets the Eldorado Area Gardening Tour apart from most garden tours is its focus on education. Each garden will feature gardeners, Master Gardeners and homeowners as docents to answer all your questions. A plant list will be available at each location.
The tour starts at La Tienda center, just off 285 on Avenida Vista Grande. There you can pick up a free tour map. For a minimal donation you will also receive a goody bag full of coupons, seeds, fact sheets and a color brochure. The brochure details water use per square foot for each garden, as well as other insights into the gardens' creation and maintenance. Proceeds from this year's donations benefit Eldorado Fire and Rescue.

Location: Collected Works Bookstore (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226Embarking on his eighth adventure in As the Crow Flies, Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire has a more important matter on his mind than cowboys and criminals: his daughter, Cady, is getting married. Walt and his old friend Henry Standing Bear head up to the Cheyenne Reservation to scout out wedding locations when they witness a young Crow woman plummet from Painted Warrior's majestic cliffs. It's not Walt's turf, but the newly appointed tribal police chief and Iraqi war veteran Lolo Lang shanghais him into helping with the investigation. Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers
Location: Sol @ Santa Fe Brewing Company (505) 424-9637Based out in Tempe, AZ, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers are taking their brand new sustainable tour bus out on the road with them this summer. The bus, which already featured a bio-diesel generator, now also boasts solar panels on the roof that that will fuel batteries running various non-engine electrical needs. On their 44 city US tour this summer, the band will save about 500 gallons of gas, while encouraging their fans who attend the tour to pursue sustainable energy as well. Additionally, the band contributes to 1% For The Planet on an annual basis and recycles shipping boxes at their online merchandise store. Frontman Roger Clyne and his family have also made their home more efficient and drive a hybrid vehicle, and his award-winning Mexican Moonshine Ultra-Premium Tequilas are distilled in a specialized process that prevents toxins from entering the water table in Jalisco, Mexico.
Before joining up with his Peacemakers, Roger Clyne got his start with The Refreshments back in the 1990's, who were best known for "Banditos" and "Down Together" (from their #1 on Heatseekers album Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy) as well as the King Of The Hill theme song. Clyne is a fourth generation Arizona native, and with Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, the group has had six consecutive albums debut in Billboard's Top 10 Internet Sales Chart- the first band to ever do so. Over the years, they've opened for everyone from Willie Nelson and Sammy Hagar to Kid Rock and John Fogerty. They also hold an annual south-of-the-border party bash called Circus Mexicus in Rocky Point, Mexico, which draws thousands of fans from every US state and 15 countries worldwide. As Paste Magazine puts it, "Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers are proof that the crazy, reckless, restless, swaggering soul of American rock is still burning a hole in the night sky."

Eric Sandweiss at Collected Works Bookstore
Location: Collected Works Bookstore (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226Charles Cushman (1896-1972) photographed a disappearing world in living color. Cushman's midcentury America--a place normally seen only through a scrim of gray--reveals itself as a place as vivid and real as the view through a window. Eric Sandweiss' book The Day in Its Color introduces readers to Cushman's extraordinary work and a recently unearthed archive of his work: 14,500 color photographs, most shot on vivid Kodachrome stock. From 1938-1969, Cushman travelled constantly, shooting everything he encountered as he ventured from New York to New Orleans, Chicago to San Francisco, and everywhere in between. His photos include portraits, ethnographic studies, agricultural and industrial landscapes, movie sets and media events, children playing, laborers working, and thousands of street scenes, all precisely documented in time and place. The result is a chronicle of an era almost never seen, or even envisioned, in color. This well-preserved collection is all the more remarkable for having gone undiscovered for decades. What makes the photos most valuable, however, is the wide range of subjects, landscapes, and moods it captures--snapshots of a lost America as yet untouched by a homogenizing overlay of interstate highways, urban renewal, chain stores, and suburban development--a world of hand-painted signs, state fairs, ramshackle shops, small town living and bustling urban scenes. The book also reveals the fascinating and startling life story of the man who stood, unseen, on the other side of the lens, surely one of America's most impressive amateur photographers and outsider artists. With over 150 gorgeous color prints, The Day in Its Color gives readers one of the most evocative visual histories of mid-20th century America.
Author Eric Sandweiss is the current Carmony Chair of History at Indiana University. A graduate of Harvard University and the University of California at Berkeley, he has been the recipient of a myriad of honors including a Fulbright Award and aSmithsonian Fellowship. His research interests include urban studies, architecture, and visual culture. In addition to The Day in Its Color, he is the author of St. Louis: The Evolution of an American Urban Landscape.

Geeks Who Drink
Location: El Farol (505) 983-9912Simply, a quiz game played in a pub. It's an Anglo-Irish tradition, but our goal is the same: to foster friendly competition, and promote social drinking. A noble cause!
The quiz consists of eight rounds of eight questions each, played by teams of up to six people. Questions are read aloud by the quizmaster and teams write down the answers, turning them in at the end of each round.
Rounds 1, 4 and 6 are themed rounds – anything from “Eight Questions About Sex That Won't Make You Too Uncomfortable” to “TV Shows Your Parents Watch.” Round 2 is a music round worth double points: name the artist and title for each song clip. Round 3 is a multiple choice round or a speed round. Round 5 is a visual round based on a printed handout. The all-audio Round 7 usually covers movies or TV shows, and is worth the standard eight points. Finally, Round 8 is always 16 points on Random Knowledge.
One round can be jokered, doubling your points for that round only (yes, the 16-point rounds are fair game). The team with the most points after eight rounds is the winner.

Square Peg Productions presents Gillian Welch
Location: The Lensic Performing Arts Center 211 W. San Francisco Street, Santa Fe, NM 505 988 7050Event Type: Music/Nightlife
The Harrow & The Harvest, Gill and Dave’s new record, is both a product of and is unrelated to those years in-between. Best to forget that. What it is, indisputably, is the product of two people who have become so entwined in one another that the songs and the singing and the playing on this record seems to exude from a single voice. This is the sound of two people in a room, playing to one another, with one another. This is the sound of the room in which the two people are playing. This is the sound of two voices, locked in unison, locked in harmony. The sound of two people playing live, with no overdubs, and very few takes. Two people making music together as if they were one soul combined.
Now back up.
This is what we know: Gill and Dave met at Berklee College of Music; Gillian was studying songwriting, while Dave studied guitar; they met at an audition for a country band. Together, they moved to Nashville, TN where most of their work together has been produced. Since then they have influenced and inspired new generations of country and folk singers, songwriters and players. They have earned the slavish admiration of many of the most lauded and loved voices of the Americana milieu now living – and some who have since deceased (rest their souls). They’ve had their songs recorded by the likes of Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, and Solomon Burke. Gill and Dave’s body of work is deeply rooted in the world it has sought to portray in song: the American South.
“Yes, Tennessee figures rather prominently in the new songs,” says Gillian. The record, however, has little of the sweet sunny south; in fact, there’s a real dark pallor to the thing – and the language in the songs seems to recall the shady groves of Tennessee far more than anything that the duet has done in recent memory. “The truth is, we absented ourselves from Nashville for a while, to escape the weight of home and studio and record label. But I think our thoughts turned back there with a newness and clarity I hadn’t felt since I moved there almost 20 years ago.”
And the record they’ve made, tonally, is a new Southern sound, with the sort of songs you wouldn’t be surprised to hear issuing from some verdant, wooded hollow in Appalachia; the sort of songs you’d expect to be sung to soothe unquiet babies. Songs you’d expect to hear hollered from an Asheville grange hall, all too late in the evening. Songs with the wry humor of the back porch. “Dave says this record is ‘ten different kinds of sad’, but it’s not without humor. I feel like there’s a maturity in it and a sense of place that only comes with time.” Gillian continues, “We feel at home in the folk tradition, and using its language combined with our own.” “That’s the whole point of the folk tradition,” laughs Dave.
And the language is gorgeous.
From the song “Tennessee”:I kissed you cause I’ve never been an angel
I learned to say hosannas on my knees
But they threw me out of Sunday school when I was nine
And the sisters said I did just as I pleased
Even so I try to be a good girl
It’s only what I want that makes me weak
I had no desire to be a child of sin
Then you went and pressed your whiskers to my cheek
The thing is, the two of them, Gill and Dave, have arrived at a place in their music where it seems to be impossible to attribute those words to one or the other. That’s what I mean about their mindmeld. It’s not just them performing and playing and singing together that is so uncanny, so wholly of one voice – the songwriting itself seems to have arrived at a similar apotheosis. “As a songwriting team,” says Dave, “we are more seamless and fluid than ever before. It’s nearly impossible to unravel who wrote what word, what line, what sentiment.” Gillian adds: “It’s truly immaterial at this point. When Dave and I really get down to work, it’s like we’re in a lifeboat, like we’re the only two people in the world, and it is very quiet. I think some of that quietness comes through on these recordings.”
Listen to this record with the lights low. Listen to it on an old radio, cradled next to your ear. This is the sound of two people, singing and playing their songs. Forget the years in between.
“The way you made it
That’s the way it will be.”

David King Dunaway at Collected Works Bookstore
Location: Collected Works Bookstore (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226Even before there was a road, there was a route. Buffalo trails, Indian paths, the old Santa Fe Trail--all led across the Great Plains and the western mountains to the golden oasis of California. America's insatiable westering urge culminated in Route 66, the highway that ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. Opened in 1926, Route 66 became the quintessential American road. It offered the chance for freedom and a better life, whether you were down-and-out Okies fleeing the Dust Bowl in the 1930s or cool guys cruising in a Corvette in the 1960s. Even though the interstates long ago turned Route 66 into a bylane, it still draws travelers from around the world who long to experience the freedom of the open road.
A Route 66 Companion, edited by David King Dunaway, gathers fiction, poetry, memoir, and oral history to present a literary portrait of America's most storied highway. From accounts of pioneering trips across the western plains to a sci-fi fantasy of traveling Route 66 in a rocket, here are stories that explore the mystique of the open road, told by master storytellers ranging from Washington Irving to Raymond Chandler, Joan Didion, Sylvia Plath, Leslie Marmon Silko, and John Steinbeck. Interspersed among them are reminiscences that, for the first time, honor the varied cultures--Native American, Mexican American, and African American, as well as Anglo--whose experiences run through the Route 66 story like the stripe down the highway.
David King Dunaway has written about American culture for publications from The New York Times to The Virginia Quarterly. He is currently a professor at the University of New Mexico, a Distinguished Professor of Broadcasting at San Francisco State Univeristy, and a DJ for KUNM-FM radio in Albuquerque.

Metropolitan Opera Scenery Display
Location: El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe 555 Camino de la Familia (railyard area) (505) 992-0591METROPOLITAN OPERA SCENERY DISPLAY
Two huge painted scenic backdrops from the old Metropolitan Opera house in New York, bought in the 1950's with money won on "The $64,000 Question" TV show by an opera enthusiast from Long Island, New York, will be on display, Wednesday evenings at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe in the railyard, May 9th to June 6th. The story of the scenery, painted by famed Met designer Joseph Urban, will be presented in a talk given by Webster Young, a composer, music journalist, and New York opera director. Young was invited twice by the White House to be a candidate for director of the National Endowment for the Arts. He will talk, play his concert grand piano, and host a Q&A with the audience.
The scenic backdrops by Urban date from 1928 and 1935, and are 50 x 24 feet. They will take up the entire width of one of the museum's large rooms. Many of the Met's great singers sang in front of this scenery.
This event also celebrates a book release by Webster Young: "Berkeley-Paris Express - The Education of a Composer, 1968-80". Copies of the book will be available for signing. Young is composer of 10 ballets and 6 operas and studied with followers of Stravinsky and Milhaud. He has been a music journalist for New York Newsday, the National Catholic Register, and the InterCollegiate Review. Numerous videos of his operas and ballets may be found on Youtube under "Webster Young".

Weekly Story Time at Collected Works
Location: Collected Works Bookstore & Coffeehouse (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226Featured books cater to children aged 6 months to 5 years. Most sessions begin with simple but engaging books for the youngest listeners, and build to longer picture books, rhyming poems, our newest favorites, and some classics for the "big kids".
As attention spans vary, families are welcome to come and go as they wish--- we are delighted to host the group to its saturation point! Occasionally, we break into song if the children need movement or a change of pace. We also encourage dialogue as the stories are read and the audience's curiousity is piqued.
All children must be accompanied and upervised by an adult throughout the Story Time. Please come enjoy our gatherings and follow up with a visit to our cafe; nothing goes ith Story Time like a good snack!

GEEKS WHO DRINK TRIVIA CONTEST
Location: El Farol 808 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM (505) 983-9912Event Type: Music/Nightlife

Genalogical Society of Hispanic America
Location: The Lodge at Santa Fe 505-992-5800 1-888-563-4373 ANCESTRAL RESEARCH COMES TO SANTA FE
Santa Fe – Where Trails and Cultures Meet
The Genealogical Society of Hispanic America (GSHA) has selected Santa Fe for its 2012 conference to be held June 15th-17th at The Lodge at Santa Fe.
“To help celebrate New Mexico centennial, our national board chose Santa Fe” states Douglas Daniels, President of GSHA. “New Mexican genealogy is one of the most engaging studies in the country for genealogists. Students and scholars of humanities including anthropology and language study it because of its unique cultural and historical perspective” states Daniels.
In addition to the latest in methodologies in genealogical research and publications available at the conference, selected presenters will discuss historical events with a cultural perspective, a way in which the narrative of our State continues to be defined. Topics will also include the Camino Real, Jewish and French presence since the 1500s and a presentation titled, Women, Wills and their Goods, all within the framework of genealogy and family history.
The Keynote speaker will be Ana Pacheco, a native of Santa Fe who was the publisher of La Herencia magazine. Like many, Pacheco traces her New Mexico ancestral roots to the 17th century.
Conference package or per session attendance is available. Anyone can attend and pay for individual sessions on site the day of the conference. For details and costs and to view the list of speakers, visit www.gsha.net.
The Genealogical Society of Hispanic America is a nonprofit 501c3 organization with two chapters located in Pueblo Colorado and Burbank California. GSHA members, share the commonality of interest in researching our Hispano genealogy, with roots predominantly in New Mexico, Colorado, California and the countries of Mexico and Spain. The vast majority of our members are proud descendants of the first Spanish Europeans to settle in what is now New Mexico, United States of America, in 1598 or earlier.

Genalogical Society of Hispanic America

GEEKS WHO DRINK TRIVIA CONTEST
Location: El Farol 808 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM (505) 983-9912Event Type: Music/Nightlife
The team with the most points after eight rounds is the winner.

opening reception for: New Sculpture Garden : Sally Hepler, Gary Beals and Bret Price
Location: Karan Ruhlen Gallery 225 Canyon Road 505-820-0807In the early days of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso revolutionized the art of sculpture when he began creating his constructions fashioned by combining disparate objects and materials into one constructed piece of sculpture. Similarly, the work of Constantin Brâncuşi at the beginning of the century paved the way for later abstract sculpture. Brâncuşi distilled subjects down to their essences. These elegantly refined forms became synonymous with 20th century sculpture.
During the late 1950s and the 1960s abstract sculptors began experimenting with a wide array of new materials and different approaches to creating their work.
The artists featured in our new sculpture garden work in hand fabricated steel and bronze each in their own unique style.

Location: The Santa Fe Opera (505) 986-5955 or (800) 280-4654Ah, Tosca! Bewitched by her glamour and charisma, even the hated Baron Scarpia called her la divina. See why Puccini’s Tosca became the defining role for Bernhardt and Callas, and now the soprano Amanda Echalaz—whose London performances as Tosca had critics groping for superlatives. In her much-anticipated American debut in Santa Fe’s new production, she is joined by debut artist Andrew Richards as Tosca’s lover Cavaradossi. Thomas Hampson returns to Santa Fe after an absence of almost three decades. Raymond Aceto and Hampson share honors as the villainous Scarpia. Chief Conductor Frédéric Chaslin is on the podium.
Synopsis
Composed by Giacomo Puccini
Sung in Italian with English and Spanish Opera Titles
ACT IOn the run from secret police and political enemies, the activist Angelotti rushes into the Church of Sant’ Andrea della Valle, hiding as the comical old Sacristan busies himself. Soon the dashing painter Cavaradossi enters to work on his portrait of Mary Magdalene based on a likeness of Angelotti’s sister, the Marchesa Attavanti. Cavaradossi compares her dark beauty to that of his fairer lover, the charismatic diva Floria Tosca (“Recondita armonia”). Angelotti emerges and is given food by his friend Cavaradossi, who rushes him back into hiding as Tosca calls out. She questions Cavaradossi jealously before praying, then reminds him they are to meet that evening. Once she leaves, he signals Angelotti to emerge from the chapel and the two friends, learning that the police have discovered Angelotti’s escape, flee to Mario’s villa.
Meanwhile, the Sacristan returns with choirboys who are to sing a Te Deum that day. Their excitement is cut short by Baron Scarpia, feared chief of the secret police, searching for Angelotti. When Tosca reappears, Scarpia plays to her jealousy, revealing a fan with the Attavanti crest. She swears vengeance on Cavaradossi and storms out as the church fills with worshipers. Scarpia orders his men to follow her to Angelotti’s hideout; then, with the chanting chorus in procession behind him, Scarpia fantasizes aloud about sexually entrapping Tosca. His reverie continues until he suddenly remembers he is in church (“Va, Tosca!”).
ACT IIFrom his opulent office in the Palazzo Farnese, Scarpia plans how he will manipulate Tosca to serve his political and sexual ambitions. Scarpia’s henchman Spoletta, having failed to locate Angelotti, brings in Cavaradossi; Scarpia questions him while Tosca can be heard singing a cantata elsewhere in the palace. She enters as her lover is being removed for more forceful interrogation. Unable to endure his screams, she divulges Angelotti’s hiding place and the battered Cavaradossi is carried back in; realizing that Tosca has “talked,” he denounces her. But when an officer interrupts to announce that Napoleon has defeated Scarpia’s allies in Battle of Marengo, Cavaradossi’s bitterness turns to exultant cries of “Vittoria!” and he is dragged off to prison.
Finally alone with Tosca, Scarpia flatters her beauty and suggests that her lover’s life and freedom are in her hands. Tosca fends off his advances, turning to God in her despair (“Vissi d’arte”). Spoletta interrupts the standoff to announce that Angelotti, faced with capture, has killed himself. Cornered and without options, Tosca relents to Scarpia. He pretends to order a mock execution and sends Spoletta out, then jots a safe-conduct for Cavaradossi and Tosca. But the desperate Tosca, having spotted a letter-knife on Scarpia’s desk, stabs him and removes the safe-conduct from his grasp as he dies. Placing candles at his head and a crucifix on his chest, she leaves.
ACT IIIThe lone voice of a shepherd boy greets the dawn as Mario awaits execution at the Castel Sant’Angelo. He bribes the jailer to slip a farewell note to Tosca. Gloom overwhelms him as he writes (“E lucevan le stelle”) until Tosca rushes in, excitedly recounting her escape from Scarpia. Mario caresses the hands that killed for his sake (“O dolci mani”) and the two hail their future. As the firing squad appears, Tosca — ever the star — advises Mario on how to fake his death convincingly. The soldiers fire and depart. Tosca urges Mario to hurry, but when he remains motionless; she sees that Scarpia has outmaneuvered her one last time: the bullets were real. As Spoletta rushes in to arrest Tosca, she cries out to Scarpia to meet her before God, then leaps to her death from the castle’s parapet.

Location: The Santa Fe Opera (505) 986-5955 or (800) 280-4654Before there was Carmen, there was The Pearl Fishers — the score that established the 24-year-old Bizet as a genius. The Pearl Fishers shimmers with the beauty of its exotic setting, and includes one of the most cherished duets in the entire operatic literature, sung by best friends Nadir (tenor Eric Cutler) and Zurga (baritone Christopher Magiera) who vie for the love of priestess Leila (soprano Nicole Cabell). The Pearl Fishers delivers the same creative team that designed and directed the highly acclaimed 2010 production of Madame Butterfly.
Synopsis
Composed by Georges Bizet
Sung in French with English and Spanish Opera Titles
Act IOn the Ceylon shore that provides their livelihood and the rhythm of their lives, the pearl fishers meet and choose Zurga as their king. Nadir, once Zurga’s best friend, suddenly appears after a year away in the forest. Zurga persuades him to resettle in their village, returning to his former life and their close friendship. They recall their shared past, when they fell in love with the same woman but renounced her to remain loyal to each other. Renewing their former closeness, they vow never again to let their love for a woman threaten it (“Au fond du temple saint”).
News arrives of a boat’s landing nearby. It bears a virgin chosen as a priestess to help protect the fishermen from storms and the forces of evil. Veiled and escorted by the high priest Nourabad, she arrives for instruction in her prayerful duties and is warned of the penalty for disobedience: death. She recognizes Nadir, who in turn is struck by her resemblance to Leïla, the woman he and Zurga forswore. As she ascends a promontory to begin her sea vigil, a gust momentarily reveals her face. Now the impassioned Nadir sees she can only be Leïla, and he is powerless to keep his vow to his friend. As she prays to the goddess Siva, she hears Nadir confess that he has followed her to the island and still dreams of her (“Je crois entendre” encore), and her hymn becomes a passionate song of love.
Act IIAt their ancient temple, Nourabad reminds Leïla to remain faithful to her priestly duties. Leïla responds by telling how she protected a fugitive, refusing at knifepoint to reveal him to his pursuers; she continues to wear the pearl necklace he gave her as a reward. But after Nourabad leaves, she thinks of Nadir and cannot sleep. When he enters she desperately warns him away, saying they will be killed if found together, but soon they can only surrender to their passion. Nadir leaves, promising to return for her.
Angry villagers discover the fleeing Nadir and demand his death along with that of the veiled, unrecognized Leïla. But Zurga reminds them that only their king can determine the lovers’ fate. He orders that their lives be spared, surreptitiously urging them to escape the now-hostile village. His mercy turns to rage as Nourabad removes Leïla’s veil, revealing Zurga’s betrayal. He sentences the lovers to death as they appeal to the god Brahma for protection.
Act IIIReflecting on his friendship with Nadir and his own love for Leïla, Zurga regrets his death-sentence and struggles toward a nobler path. Leïla approaches him and attempts to protect Nadir, claiming she followed him to the island. Her devotion arouses Zurga’s jealousy, but when Nourabad arrives to remove Leïla, Zurga notices her cherished pearl necklace; as she attempts to entrust it to a villager for her mother’s sake, Zurga seizes it.
With emotional chants and dances, the villagers prepare Nadir and Leïla’s funeral pyre for their execution at sunrise. Nadir despondently prays that he might somehow save Leïla. She enters, and together they prepare for death. Then, as a glow becomes visible in the distant sky, Zurga warns his subjects that their village is on fire. Blood-lust turns to confusion as villagers run to save their homes.
Alone with Nadir and Leïla, Zurga explains that he set the fire to save them; he had recognized the necklace as the one he gave Leïla after she saved his life, and now he sees she belongs with Nadir. They escape with his blessing, singing of their happiness.
