Geoffrey Gorman

GoremanSMStrange beasts inhabit Geoffrey Gorman's world. Made of rusted metal, discarded cloth, twigs, and anything else he finds, they stalk, stare, and fly through an imaginary world. Gorman only started creating his own art about five years ago, after a career of helping other artists market their work and establish their businesses. But, a fiftieth birthday trek through India and the Himalayas rekindled his lifelong connection with the natural world. When he was invited to create his own art for a show, he didn't hesitate.

"I just went into the back yard and picked up some sticks and rags and wire and began putting them together," he remembers.

GoremanSM The assemblage became a fanciful animal, and Gorman was hooked. Although he still does some teaching and curating, he primarily spends his time creating his menagerie of creatures. The animals are both inspired by and made from the Santa Fe environment. "After years of walking in the in the forests and the deserts, I see the landscape here as very elemental," he explains. "My work is about basics too--about capturing an essence of movement, of life. And the main color I use is blue. That's a result of living under the beautiful New Mexico sky for so long."
